Newtown Public Schools
Weekly Update - August 25, 2025
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Newtown Families, Faculty and Staff,
There’s no day quite like the first day of school—it’s truly one of the most exciting and energizing days of the year.
Each year, I do my best to visit as many of our schools as possible to soak in the joy, anticipation, and energy that marks this special day. I usually begin at the middle and high schools, where the students are often more excited to see each other than the adults running the building! But as the morning unfolds, I make my way to the elementary schools—and that’s where the real magic happens.
Some children arrive beaming with excitement, proudly wearing special “first day” outfits. Others, especially our youngest learners, walk in looking a bit bewildered—still finding their way. And yet, they step forward with so much trust in the caring adults there to greet them. It’s enough to melt your heart.
I also saw more than a few parents wiping away tears as they said goodbye and headed back to their cars. These are powerful moments, reminders of the incredible trust our families place in us. And that trust is something we never take for granted.
While today marks the first day of school for our students, most of our educators returned last Wednesday to begin preparations for the year ahead. On Friday afternoon, our entire staff came together for our opening convocation ceremony—an energizing tradition where we celebrate our accomplishments, recognize exceptional staff, and set the tone for the year.
This year’s convocation honored several outstanding individuals, including our paraeducator of the year, Kathy Coffey; our teacher of the year, Kathy Dye; and staff members celebrating 25 years of dedicated service to Newtown Public Schools. We also welcomed guest speaker Suzanne Dailey, author of Teach Happier This School Year: 40 Weeks of Inspiration and Reflection and host of the Teach Happier podcast. Suzanne delivered a funny, uplifting, and inspiring message that left us all feeling positive and grounded as we head into the new school year.
This year, we also celebrated some truly exciting academic achievements. Test scores across the district in grades 3–8 are on the rise, reflecting the hard work of our students and staff. Newtown Middle School was recently ranked 30th in the state by U.S. News & World Report, and just last week we learned that Newtown High School has climbed to #24 in the state, an incredible jump of 17 spots from last year!
These are remarkable accomplishments—and a testament to the strength of our schools, the dedication of our educators, and the support of our entire community. Together, they affirm what so many already know: Newtown Public Schools is an exceptional district, and Newtown is a wonderful place to raise a family.
Warm regards,
Anne

New Staff Orientation
This year, Newtown Public Schools proudly welcomed more than 30 new certified staff members to our team, along with a number of new paraeducators, building substitutes, interns, and unified arts educators. These talented individuals bring a wide range of skills and experiences, and we’re excited to have them join our NPS community.
Before the full faculty returned, our new educators participated in a five-day New Staff Orientation (NSO) designed to help them hit the ground running. Led by Annie Fries, NSO Coordinator, the week provided a comprehensive introduction to “all things Newtown.” Topics included concept-based curriculum and instruction, fostering inclusive classroom communities, supporting all learners, safety and security protocols, and benefits and wellness information.

Congratulations to Para of the Year, Kathy Coffey of SHS!
Kathy joined the Sandy Hook Elementary School team over a decade ago, and in that time, she has become a deeply respected and trusted member of the school community. Frequently sought after by classroom teachers, Kathy’s collaborative spirit and unwavering commitment to students set her apart.
Whether she’s holding the end of a jump rope, pitching in during a kickball game, or diving into an art project, one of Kathy’s greatest gifts is her ability to build genuine, lasting connections with students. As both an advocate for children and a role model for peers, she shows up each day with compassion, energy, and positivity.
When asked what advice she would offer others, Kathy shared:
“Lead with positivity and compassion, and all the rest will fall into place.”
Congratulations, Kathy! Your impact is felt every day, and this recognition is so well deserved.
Congratulations to Teacher of the Year, Kathy Dye of NMS!

Meal Charging and Account Management with MySchoolBucks
Newtown Public Schools follows a Board-approved Meal Charging Policy that ensures all students have access to a healthy meal each school day, regardless of their meal account balance. While we encourage families to keep their child’s account in good standing, students will not be denied a meal due to a lack of funds.
To support families in managing their child’s school meal account, we offer MySchoolBucks, a secure online payment system that allows parents to:
Add funds to their student’s account
Set up automatic payments
Monitor account balances and purchase history
Receive low-balance notifications
We encourage all families to sign up for a MySchoolBucks account at www.myschoolbucks.com or through the mobile app. By staying informed and maintaining a positive balance, you help ensure a smooth and uninterrupted meal experience for your child.
For more information about the district’s Meal Charging Policy, please visit our website or your child's school.
Introducing Stopfinder: A New Transportation App for Families
We’re excited to announce that Newtown Public Schools will be launching Stopfinder, a new app designed to keep you informed about your child’s bus schedule in real time.
Stopfinder is a secure, easy-to-use, all-in-one app that gives you access to the most accurate transportation information—anytime, anywhere. With the app, you can:
-
View your child’s bus schedule.
-
Set up GeoAlerts to receive notifications when the bus arrives or departs from specific locations, such as your home, school, or other points along the route.
-
Customize Alert Zones for individual students based on their unique route.
An email invitation will be sent this week from no-reply@stopfinder.com to the primary parent/guardian email we have on file. The way the system is configured, one contact is designated as the primary Stopfinder contact—this individual will receive the initial invitation and will then have the ability to invite additional contacts (e.g., the other parent, grandparents, caregivers, etc.).
Once you receive the invitation, download the Stopfinder app for free from the App Store or Google Play, and follow the instructions to register. Please note: You must complete the registration process using the district’s invitation before you can access your student’s transportation schedule.
If you do not receive your invitation by Friday, please contact Stopfinder Support at stopfindersupport@all-startransportation.com for assistance.
