All Things EQ
Hello Families,
The motto this week is:
I know what I am looking forward to today.
The intent of this week's motto is to help students develop optimism. I know, I know, insert eye roll here. Somewhere along the way, optimism became the person smiling at 6 a.m., telling you everything's going to be great, and you want to gently close the door on that person. Viewed this way, optimism can feel disingenuous, like it means always being happy. But that is not what optimism is.
Optimism is not pretending a hard thing is not hard. It is believing that things will work out in the long run. That is it. That quiet belief makes resilience possible, and it makes effort worth it. You do not work hard on something you have already decided is hopeless.
Which brings us to this week's motto. Ask your child what they are looking forward to each day. They might say lunchtime, or 3:15, and that's okay. My favorite weekday is Friday. But that doesn't mean I can't find parts of Monday I enjoy too. Encourage your child to list as many things as possible, because their day will be more fun when they have more things to look forward to.
"Looking forward to things is half the pleasure of them."
-L.M. Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables
Here is one thing worth pointing out to your child: knowing what you are looking forward to is not about ignoring what is hard. It is about finding one thing worth moving toward. Even something small counts, because what you look forward to does not have to be big. It just has to be real.
A student once shared that he had done poorly on a test, and that the class would be reviewing the test at school the next day. He said he considered being absent so he wouldn't have to deal with it. Then he asked himself, "Do I know what I am looking forward to today?" and he thought of his friends and lunchtime. That gave him the motivation to go to school. That is what resilience looks like.
So, what are you looking forward to today?
Wishing you and your family a wonderful week,
Danna Evans
