Updates from the June Coalition Meeting

Our June session celebrated Career Ready PA accomplishments, as well as the success of Remake Learning Days and the Career Ready PA Backpack Challenge. The mega school hosts shared snapshots of their events, and Nicole Singer, Acting Director of College and Career Readiness, at Allentown School District shared how she motivated the schools to participate in the Backpack Challenge and earn over 40 percent of the artifacts in the state! What an accomplishment! Saturday Light Brigade (SLB Radio) shared how they will support the Middle School Innovation Grant pilots with the Youth Engagement project for Catasauqua Middle School, Windber Area Middle School, and Freeport Area Middle School. North East Middle School (Scranton School District) will partner with the PA Department of Agriculture for a Farm City event in 2027. Our Career Ready PA liaisons continue to support each of the 10 regions as a point of contact and support for career and workforce readiness opportunities across the state. Their connections are invaluable to create awareness statewide to build career pathways for all learners. To view more information about the Career Ready PA Coalition, resources, and contacts, please view the Coalition website here.

Skills That Matter: Strong Statewide Turnout for the New CEW Standards Webinar

Pennsylvania educators showed up in force for Skills That Matter: Employability and the New CEW Standards, the professional learning webinar hosted by PDE's Career Readiness Advisor. The session highlighted the newly revised Career Education and Work (CEW) standards, offering best practices, resources, and instructional strategies to help schools transition ahead of the timeline and strengthen career portfolios in the Future Ready PA Index.

A total of 339 of Pennsylvania's 500 public school districts attended — a 67.8 percent statewide engagement rate. Participation extended well beyond traditional districts, too: 40 charter schools, 12 Career & Technology Centers, and 11 private schools also joined the session, reflecting broad, cross-sector interest in the updated standards.

With 339 districts already on board, attention now turns to the 161 districts not yet reached. The good news: there will be another opportunity. The webinar will be offered again during the 2026–2027 school year, extending an open invitation to every district, charter school, CTC, and private school that wasn't able to join this time. As Pennsylvania schools prepare for the revised CEW standards, this session remains a valuable, practical resource for getting ahead of the transition.

Middle School Innovation Grant Pilots

The Middle School Innovation grant pilots will prioritize hands-on, immersive learning experiences, community partnerships, and employability skills with a focus on youth engagement. Catasauqua Area Middle School, Freeport Area Middle School, and Windber Area Middle School will be supported by SLB Radio in Pittsburgh, PA, to provide professional development opportunities and an audio documentary produced by the students, with a focus on career exploration. North East Middle School (Scranton School District) will partner with the PA Department or Agriculture for a Farm City event in Spring 2027. Stay tuned as the “stories” unfold!

Remake Learning Days Festival, May 1-23, 2026 - Career Ready PA Backpack Challenge

The 2026 Career Ready PA Backpack Challenge marked our sixth consecutive year partnering with Remake Learning. Held May 1–23 alongside Remake Learning Days, the Challenge engaged approximately 13,000 students from 194 schools across 135 local education agencies, reaching all 10 Career Ready PA regions and students in 45 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties. Together, students submitted 9,633 career-readiness artifacts for their personal portfolios — a remarkable 79 percent jump over last year's total. Choosing from more than 400 unique events spanning the arts, maker activities, science, outdoor learning, technology, and youth voice, participants earned digital badges and real career-exploration evidence, and 42 schools submitted 100 or more artifacts to earn a commemorative Career Ready PA banner.

Beyond the headline numbers, the data shows deeper and broader engagement than ever before. Our 14 large-scale Mega Events were a standout success, generating 4,263 artifacts — 44 percent of all submissions — with 12 events earning banner recognition for their host schools. We also saw encouraging growth among older students, who have traditionally been harder to reach: middle and high schoolers accounted for 24 percent of submissions, double last year's share, and grades 3–8 submitted 150 percent more artifacts than the year prior. Most meaningful of all were the students' own reflections: young learners pointed to teamwork and problem-solving as key skills, older students most often cited new career awareness and hands-on exposure to STEAM topics, and an overwhelming majority across every grade level said they loved the experience. The 2026 Challenge gave thousands of Pennsylvania students the chance to build real-world skills and imagine their futures with confidence.

Congratulations to the 42 banner schools that earned over 100 artifacts for the 2026 Career Ready PA Backpack Challenge during Remake Learning Days!

Region 1 — ECTS Innovation in Action (Erie County Technical School)

Erie County Technical School welcomed students ages 11–13 for a high-energy day of live demonstrations from regional industry partners. Students operated robotic systems, watched drones in action, and took part in interactive manufacturing activities showing how products are designed, built, and tested. The event offered a hands-on look at the technology and career pathways shaping today's workforce.

Region 2 — Entrepreneurship in the Arts (Freeport Area Middle School)

Freeport Area Middle School turned an evening into a celebration of creativity and entrepreneurship, held alongside the district art show and spring band concert. Families enjoyed a music career panel and a rotation of student-led art studios — painted coasters, stitching, origami, and Model Magic sculptures — taught by students from the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Artwork created that night was later displayed at a local coffee shop, connecting the arts to real-world career pathways and community pride.

Region 3 — Career Connections: From Field to Future (Coudersport School District)

Coudersport Area Jr-Sr High School connected students ages 8–18 with professionals from agriculture, healthcare, and natural resources. Through hands-on, interactive stations, young people explored high-demand career pathways rooted in their own rural community. The evening emphasized experiential learning, career awareness, and meaningful local partnerships.

Region 4 — Experience the Martin-Baker Factory Floor (Windber Area MS/HS)

In partnership with Martin-Baker America, Windber's gymnasium was transformed into a working model of the company's ejection-seat manufacturing operation. Students rotated through zones mirroring real departments — an assembly line, a soft goods sewing lab, a logistics hub, a front office, and a supply chain lab — discovering local careers in engineering, logistics, finance, and the skilled trades. An afternoon community open house invited families and neighbors to see the students' talent and one of Windber's premier employers in action.

Region 5 — Exploring the Trades Day (Susquehanna County Career & Technology Center)

The Susquehanna County CTC introduced Elk Lake's 3rd and 5th graders to high-demand skilled trades through age-appropriate, hands-on experiences. Students rotated through nine CTE programs — including automotive technology, welding, cosmetology, criminal justice, and health careers — guided by instructors and supported by high school mentors. It was an early, engaging window into technical career pathways.

Region 6 — Future Builders & Innovators Day (Berwick Area School District)

Berwick's East and West elementary schools hosted a morning of career exploration and STEM discovery for 3rd and 4th graders. Students visited a local vocational-technical school's program displays, enjoyed play-based learning from a children's museum, and watched a live experiment led by the Chief Science Officers Program. The student-directed format let children choose what to explore, sparking curiosity about future careers.

Region 7 — Grade-by-Grade Remake Learning Days (Pittston Area School District)

Pittston Area went big, hosting a full series of Remake Learning Days for every grade from Kindergarten through 5th. Younger students programmed Sphero robots, made magnetic slime, and rotated through hands-on STEM stations, while fourth graders enjoyed greenhouse visits. Strong community partnerships — from Penn State Master Gardeners to Lackawanna State Park and local businesses — made the multi-day celebration possible.

Region 8 — Catasauqua & Allentown (two events)

Catasauqua Middle School's Achievement Night: Pathways to Your Future celebrated a year of student growth with a student-led inaugural science fair and a career expo aligned to eight district career pathways. In Allentown, the Multi-Disciplinary Project Exposition filled the PPL Center with PreK-12 student projects and performances drawn from classrooms, clubs, and community programs. Together, the two events showcased the breadth of student talent across the region.

Region 9 — Blast Off Into Summer Learning (Central York School District)

Hayshire Elementary launched students "into the final frontier" with a space-themed evening of hands-on family activities. The night blended fun, creativity, and authentic learning across reading, writing, math, and science. Best of all, every family went home with a bag of materials to keep the learning going all summer long.

Region 10 — Ridley & Wyomissing (two events)

Ridley School District's two-night Festival of the Arts showcased student work from all nine district schools alongside STEM demonstrations, choir and band performances, and a costume museum. In Wyomissing, Spartan Sustainability: Small Hands, Big Change brought families to the playground and pavilion for a community night of tinkering and sustainability activities, with booths from local Scouts, the library, police and EMS, science centers, and food trucks. Both events turned learning into a community-wide celebration.
