Celebrating National School Counselors Week
In February, we celebrated National School Counselors Week to honor the dedicated professionals who play an essential role in supporting student success. School counselors guide students through academic, personal, and social challenges, helping them set goals, make decisions, and plan for the future.
At our high schools, counselors are dedicated to making a positive impact on students' lives. Whether helping students navigate academic choices, offering emotional support, or assisting with career planning, their influence is felt across all areas of student growth and success.
Patty Bauer shared, "After teaching for eight years, I became a school counselor to work with the whole student. I love helping students with their social-emotional well-being, career choices, and academic success."
Amy Baird explained, "I transitioned into academic counseling after earning my degree in psychology. Helping young adults discover their career paths and supporting them on their journey is truly a privilege."
Autumn McIntosh reflected on her role at Prospect High, saying, "I work at Prospect to make a difference in the lives of students facing the most adversity. Our staff here truly cares, and they feel like a second family to me."
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all of our school counselors for their commitment and tireless efforts in ensuring the success and well-being of every student. Thank you for all that you do!
Preparing for Success: A Family's Guide to CAASPP Testing at the High School Level
What is CAASPP Testing?
The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) is a statewide system of assessments that provides valuable information about students' progress in mastering California’s academic standards. At the high school level, CAASPP tests focus primarily on English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, with additional assessments in science for specific grade levels. The results of these tests give insight into how well students are prepared for future success in college and careers.
How to Support Students for CAASPP Success
Families, guardians, or other caregivers can play a key role in helping students succeed during CAASPP testing. Here are some tips to offer support:
-
Promote a Positive Attitude: Encourage students to approach the test with confidence. Remind them it’s a chance to show what they’ve learned.
-
Ensure Rest and Nutrition: A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast can boost focus and performance.
-
Create a Study-Friendly Space: Set up a quiet area at home for students to review materials and practice sample questions, free from distractions.
-
Familiarize with Tools: Encourage students to use the online practice tests and tools on the CAASPP website to get comfortable with the format.
-
Encourage a Growth Mindset: Remind them that the tests are not only about results but also learning. Mistakes are part of progress!
-
Stay Connected: Reach out to teachers or school staff for any questions or extra support students may need in their preparation.
By staying involved and offering encouragement, you can help your child feel ready to tackle the CAASPP tests and perform at their best.

Celebrating English Learner Success: District-Wide Achievements and Support
Mary Lynch shared an exciting update on the district’s English Learners (EL) program, celebrating the success of students who have achieved English fluency and been reclassified. This year, four students at Las Plumas High School and three at Oroville High School have reached this milestone and are now engaged in grade-level curriculum. These students were honored for their achievements during district meetings, recognizing their hard work and dedication. Mrs. Lynch also praised the EL support team, including Scott Burket, the district's EL lead, as well as key staff members like Stephanie Greco at Oroville High and Heather Martens at Las Plumas High, along with their support staff. She shared that the district currently serves 103 EL students, including 16 newcomers, 38 with special needs, and 145 students who are being monitored post-reclassification.
Mr. Williams emphasized the collaborative efforts across the district to support EL students. While designated English Language Development (ELD) teachers work directly with these students, the broader school staff also plays a critical role by integrating supportive strategies into their classrooms, regardless of the subject. This united approach is helping more students achieve reclassification, making it a district-wide success.
