NJ SCI Survey
We are participating in survey data collection using the New Jersey School Climate Improvement (NJ SCI) Survey to help obtain multiple perspectives on aspects of school climate. Collecting data is important for understanding strengths and needs in our school and how it feels to be a member of the school community. Your voice is important to us, and your opinions will help us to address current priorities. The survey is anonymous and it is voluntary. The results will be used to help create a plan to address school climate needs and make improvements to the school. You may submit a separate survey per child in the school building if you feel their experiences are different, but you do not have to. Click here to take the survey and enter the password: parent If you have any questions during or after the survey, please contact VP Jack Hamlin at jhamlin@hoboken.k12.nj.us. This survey will be open from Monday 12/4 - Friday 12/22.

The Reading Specialist Corner
The Hoboken Public School District is proud to have a certified Reading Specialist in each of our three elementary schools and Hoboken Middle School. Teaching children to read requires that every child receives excellent reading instruction and that children who are experiencing reading difficulties receive early intervention and additional instruction from professionals specifically prepared to teach them. The role of the district Reading Specialist is to provide research-based, small group reading instruction using the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education’s (IMSE) Orton-Gillingham (OG) methodology.
The purpose of the Reading Specialist Corner is to provide families with at-home literacy tips to ensure strong home-school partnerships. This week, the Reading Specialist Team is excited to share a phonemic awareness activity for our kindergarten through second grade families and a morphology activity for our third through eighth grade families.
Why is Phonemic Awareness Important?
Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words and is a strong predictor of future reading success. A ‘phoneme,’ is the smallest sound unit in a language. The English language has 44 phonemes. The beauty of developing a child’s phonemic awareness is that no manipulatives are necessary. This skill can be practiced “in the dark”; all you need are your “listening ears” and the sound of your voice.
For our kindergarten through second grade families, an important skill to practice at home is sentence segmentation. This skill requires students to hear the individual words in a spoken sentence. This prepares them for early reading. As they begin to read simple sentences, they will have the ability to segment words appropriately, which will eventually also aid them with writing skills.
In this activity, students use one to one correspondence with the words in a sentence. For the one to one correspondence, you can use manipulatives you have around the house like cars, legos, dried pasta, beads, etc. In the video model of the skill below, you will notice the teacher using colored tiles.
Why is Morphological Awareness Important?
Morphological awareness is explicitly thinking about the smallest units of meaning in language,
which are called morphemes. A ‘morpheme,’ is the smallest meaningful unit of language that cannot be further subdivided such as a prefix or suffix. Read this article from the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education on how morphology helps with vocabulary.
For our third through eighth grade families, developing the ability to identify common prefixes is a valuable skill for understanding word formation. Encourage your child to recognize prefixes and understand their meanings. Try the following strategy at home to help your child learn to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words using prefixes:
Step one: Discuss the meaning of a prefix.
Re- again or back
Step two: Connect the prefix to a word.
Repay - What do you believe this word means based on your knowledge of the prefix?
Regain - What do you believe this word means based on your knowledge of the prefix?
Step three: Check your answers in the dictionary.
Step Four: Encourage your child to create a sentence using the word.
Connors Class Learning Activities
Kindergarten
Ms. Bartolotti, Ms. Fernandez, Ms. Fleischer, Ms. Watson, Mrs. Schain, Ms. Ramos
Math: This week in math academy we finished up unit 3 investigation 1 and started Unit 3 investigation 2 making and combining 2d shapes. We started making shape murals! We read the book "The Shape of Things" by Gayle Ann Dobes. This gave us inspiration for our murals of a landscape. We also started using/building pattern block puzzles. We discovered different ways we could create them by using different shapes. We played the game "fill a hexagon" with a partner. We found so many different ways to fill the hexagons with shapes!
ELA: Kindergarten had a wonderful week in ELA! Our essential question this week was "What are the different sounds we hear?" Students listened to the story Clang! Clang! Beep! Beep! and were able to identify story elements, such as characters & setting, and visualized the sounds when listening to the story! Kindergarteners also read the stories Nat and Tip and Tim and Nan. Our Kindergarteners are doing an amazing job reading stories, and blending their words! The letter of the week was the letter Nn and our sight word this week was and. Keep up the fantastic work, KOALAfied Kindergarteners!
Social Studies: Our friends Minor, Peyton, Roger, and Leena are teaching students all about time. There are so many things to think of when we learn about time. Students are learning about the days of the week, relating that to their special’s schedule. We are teaching ourselves which day of the week we have Mandarin, Music, Art, and PE. Another focus when learning about time, is to think about the time of day. Students participated in an activity where they acted out what happens during the different stages of our day. In the morning, we woke up for school. In the afternoon, we ate lunch and had recess. In the evening, we ate dinner. Finally, at night we went to bed.
Science: Kindergartners started learning about weather. Students learned that a thermometer measures the weather each day. At the start of each class students had to measure the weather outside by using a thermometer. Students read stories about weather and are very excited to continue learning about different kinds of weather next week.
1st Grade
Ms. Vayda, Ms. Klag, Ms. Sheridan, Ms. Ramos, Ms. Criqui, Ms. Romanowski
Math: This week, first grade mathematicians continued solving story problems with three addends. Students learned about what makes an equation true or false. We sorted equations in true and false columns and as an added challenge, students corrected the false equation by changing one of the numbers to make it true. Students completed their math fluency practice. We are showing excellent growth in skip counting and missing number concepts. We will continue to work on Unit 3 Investigations next week!
ELA: This week our essential question was “Where do animals live?” Students brainstormed vocabulary words that were related to this question. We learned about animals that may live in a forest and pond. Our comprehension strategy was focused on the authors purpose and main idea. As a class we worked together to determine the main idea for each story we read. Then, students reread the text to write details to support the main idea. We have been using graphic organizers after reading our non- fiction texts this week. Our spelling words focused on ending blends: -nd, -st, -ink, -pt, -sk, -lk. We added ending blends to our visual cards to practice reading these sounds daily. Our red words this week were: eat, under, no, of, and who. In grammar, we learned about inflectional ending -ing and possessive nouns. We also completed our pre- writing task on a fantasy story. Next week we will focus on brainstorming story elements and characters for our fantasy stories and begin writing our introductions. We can't wait to see how creative everyone will get!
Social Studies: This was an exciting week in Social Studies. We discussed Zones of Regulation. The Zones of Regulation provides an easy way to think and talk about how we feel on the inside and sorts emotions into four colored Zones. We have the green zone, the blue zone, the yellow zone and the red zone. The students learned the emotions in each zone. Then we worked together to discuss how we can support our feelings in each zone, because all zones are ok. We also discussed Hanukkah and all the traditions celebrated. The students had a chance to share all of the ways they celebrate Hanukkah with their families and friends.
2nd Grade
Ms. Rinaldi, Ms. Garcia, Ms. Criqui, Ms. Courtney, Mr. Donovan, Mrs. White
Math: This week in math, we wrapped up Investigation 2 of Unit 2 by learning about rectangles and squares. We were able to take an assessment and explain if a shape was a rectangle or not a rectangle. We were also able to create our own rectangular array, given specific details about what it should look like. We began Investigation 3 and started learning about fractions. We are currently focusing on halves. Now we are able to use fraction vocabulary and the associated notation to describe fractional parts of a whole by partitioning and identifying parts of the whole.
ELA: This week our second graders started to learn about narrative nonfiction. The essential question for this text set was "how can people help out their community?" Students began to learn about the author's purpose of a text (P.I.E.), photographs, and captions while reading the stories "Lighting Lives" and "Biblioburro". The reading strategy was asking and answering questions while reading the text. The vocabulary strategy for the week was synonyms. Students had their Author's Celebration this week and were able to read their animal research reports. They had such a great time!
Social Studies: This week, we began Chapter 2 of Young Citizens which focuses on how we are part of the school community. Lesson 2 focused on school rules. We now know more about school rules, why we have school rules, what makes a good rule, and who enforces these rules.
Special Moments: We had our marking period 1 pep rally. It was so great to see the accomplishments of not only ourselves, but also our classmates. The 2nd grade teachers are so proud of everyone for all of their hard work during marking period 1!
3rd Grade
Ms. Hall, Ms. Schmidt, Ms. Gillen, Ms. Layson, Ms. Goodwin, Mrs. White, Ms. Criqui,
Mrs. Schain
Math: This week in math the students were introduced to the concept of division. The students were given 3 different strategies for solving division problems. The three strategies include, equal groups, finding a related multiplication fact and skip counting. After learning all three methods, the students were able to pick the one they like best to solve division. This was the last section of our Unit. The students will be given their Unit 1 test on Tuesday, December 12. We look forward to seeing them show off all they learned throughout this unit.
ELA: This week, the students were so excited to finish our second core novel, Real Stories from my Time: The Underground Railroad. After completing the final chapter, they used information gained from text features, illustrations, and words to reflect upon the text. The students practiced identifying main idea in various texts, and used this skill to identify main idea and supporting details in the core novel. Additionally, the students analyzed components of our new writing task, a Literary Analysis Task. After learning how to understand the prompt and organize their essays last week, the students continued using the rubric to write their second RACE body paragraphs, introductions, and conclusions. They have learned so much about LATs already!
Social Studies: Students further explored our state and federal governments this week! We determined the difference between a right and a responsibility. We then emphasized the responsibilities that we have as citizens to defend our rights and stand up for people whose rights are being disrespected.
Third Grade Thrill: This week third graders attended our First Marking Period Pep Rally! The third grade teachers are so proud of students for their outstanding character, tremendous effort, and academic growth. Keep up the great work!
Science: This week third graders started a new PLTW unit called Programming Patterns. Students listened to the story Mylo's Special Book and completed activity one called Story Factory. Students imagined what it would be like if they were writing a story and someone inserted random words into it. Students concluded that the story would be silly. In this activity, students worked in small groups to complete different tasks that when combined make a silly story. This activity helped students see how computer programmers break down a large problem into smaller tasks. Third graders shared their silly stories with each other and had a lot of laughs!
4th Grade
Ms. Schulz, Mrs. Rodriguez, Ms. Stubbe, Ms. Goodwin, Ms. Courtney, Ms. Romanowski,
Mr. Donovan
Math: This week in Mathematics, 4th graders worked on solving subtraction problems. Students worked on the U.S. standard algorithm for subtraction. They focused on word problems both solving and creating new ones identifying if they were removal, missing part, or comparison problems.
ELA: Phenomenal 4th Graders enjoyed Writer's Workshop this week. This month's focus is Narrative Writing, with students writing creative stories that establish the setting and characters, describe a problem, explain events leading to a solution, and conclude with a resolution. Mini-lessons included elaborating with descriptive details based on the five senses, writing a flashback, and revising stories by replacing boring words with more interesting vocabulary.
Social Studies: This week, 4th graders worked on understanding the new colonies including Jamestown. They learned about natural resources and the relationships between people who lived on the land before the colonists came over and the colonists. They discussed perspective and learned new vocabulary terms such as census, charter, and primary source. Keep it up 4th graders!
5th Grade
Ms. Schultes, Ms. Ortiz, Ms. Courtney, Ms. Layson, Ms. Ramos
Math: This week our 5th grade mathematicians solved problems involving addition of fractions using clock and rectangle representations to then continue playing "Roll around the Clock." Students then used their knowledge of fraction equivalents and relationships to label a linear model for fractions. As we continued working on this, students discussed patterns on the Fraction tracks and used the tracks to add and subtract. We also played the game "Fraction Track" to discuss how to represent moves on the gameboard for addition and subtraction.
POR Math: This week in math we continued to explore fractions! This week we took on the challenge of adding fractions with unlike denominators. With the help of our fraction tiles we were able to discover how we can use equivalent fractions to help us add fractions with unlike denominators. Below are some pictures of our students hard at work, finding equivalent fractions to add fractions.
Individualized Learning Pathway - Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth
During the Individualized Learning Pathway (ILP) period, students who have qualified to participate in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) programming engage in a wide array of verbal course offerings that address their specific strengths and interests. Johns Hopkins CTY believes in researching and advancing ways to identify and nurture academically talented learners. CTY furthers research, guides educators and families and inspires students from diverse communities and backgrounds to pursue their intellectual passions and create the world of tomorrow.
Huge congratulations to all of our students, who were enrolled in the CTY Young Readers Series, Building Blocks, and Grammar Fundamentals courses, on successfully completing their Fall semester! It has been amazing to see the growth that our students have shown from the beginning of their courses to now in not only their writing skills, but in their skills to communicate with peers around the country in an online discussion forum. To showcase all of their wonderful, hard work, students are creating digital portfolios highlighting their favorite assignments, some of the most constructive feedback they received on their writing, and describing their experience with the course in which they were enrolled this semester. Fantastic job, CTY friends - we are so proud of you!

Future Environmentalists are starting a new journey of exploring and discovering how to write and compose a Ted Talk. King a Ted Talk Template they will review a video by a kid whose presentation is called “What’s Wrong With Our Food System”. The template will allow students to dive deeper to understand and analyze the important components of a successful Ted Talk. They will then use their understanding to craft and present their own Ted Talk in front of their classmates.
Music with Mr. Azzarto
Hi Connors Families,
The week of November 4th, we had a guest appearance and a woodwind rehearsal that rocked the music room!
As a music educator it is extremely important to facilitate improvisation and empower the students to be themselves within our four walls here at Connors. That couldn’t be more evident than when Hayley brought her own guitar to school to play for her classmates. Hayley was so excited to lead a sing along to the classic holiday song, “Jingle Bells “ as she played her own electric guitar. You go Hayley!
As we get closer to the District Winter Concert, it is so important to practice, practice, and practice. The Connors band has been rehearsing the two songs that they will play at the concert and they really have come a long way from just making a sound on their instruments. They really sound great! Here is the 4th grade woodwind players jamming along to “Jingle Bells”!
Art with Ms. Capalbo
This week the students were introduced to large drawing boards in art class since our tables are preoccupied with the Koala Sculpture. I demonstrated different ways they can use their board at their chair and explained that I used to use them in art school all the time. They were very motivated and excited about their giant drawing boards and felt very professional while artmaking!
2nd and 3rd graders are working on Vincent Van Gogh Sunflowers. They are learning how the parts of their drawing are parts of their composition. They were working on making their compositions interesting to grab a viewers attention through different shapes, sizes, and placements of their flowers, vase, and table.
Mandarin with Ms. Ni
This week in Mandarin students learned about clothing. They practiced new vocabulary by playing Bingo (listening comprehension) and the Memory Game. Grades 3-5 reviewed the map of the school and learned directional words.
Theatre with Ms. Rotondi
This week in theatre we solidified our scenes and songs for 2nd and 3rd Grade. We are so excited to work on our material. We even had enough time to start our dances! Next week we will work on the next section of our dances. Here's a hint to one of our songs, can you guess what it is? Next week will be the answer with whose class is performing that fan favorite!
