An update for families from Centennial Public School

Centennial ConnectionAug. 25, 2024An update for families from Centennial Public School

We are looking forward to seeing you soon!

Dear Centennial Families -

We hope everyone is enjoying the summer! We have been busy over the break making some changes at the school to be ready to welcome staff, students and families back to Centennial. We extend a very warm welcome to those students and families who are new to the community. We hope that you will find a very warm welcome because we are very glad that you are here!

Centennial now has 4 portable classrooms that are still in the process of having final electrical work and inspections take place. The library has undergone a renovation and an "Annex" has been added to accommodate small group programs and instruction. The floors are gleaming and staff have been working diligently to have things in place for the return of students in just over a week's time. A reminder that the first day of school for students is Wednesday September 4th 2024.

We encourage families to use the school yard and to come onto the grounds before school starts. We have some great play space! Just a reminder that there will be construction vehicles on the back tarmac as there is still work taking place this coming week.

The school office opens tomorrow and over the course of the week we will be processing the many new registrations we have received over the summer months. As such, class lists will not be finalized or ready to share with families until the end of the week. All families will receive an email on Friday afternoon indicating the tentative class placement for your child. This will include the grade and classroom teacher. Please note that all class placements are tentative and are subject to change at the end of the second week of school. Given Ministry of Education class cap sizes as well as staffing consideration that is determined by a central committee of the Limestone District School Board, class organization and size may change. Any and all class changes will take place at the end of the second week of school and changes will not take place during the first 2 weeks of school. There is a lot of information that is taken into account when creating class lists, including requests that were made in the spring through the request process communicated with you at that time. Thank you for understanding that we may or may not be able to accommodate all requests. We really appreciate your patience and flexibility as we continue to process registrations and welcome new families to the area.

The school office will open on Monday August 26th and will be open Monday to Thursday from 8:30-4:30pm, and Friday from 8:30am to 12noon. Should you have updated contact information, please feel free to contact the school. Please note that we are not able to share classroom placement information over the phone. All classroom placement communication will take place by email on Friday afternoon.

The Centennial Connection is a weekly communication sent to families each weekend, that will provide families with information about the school, upcoming activities, staff updates, as well as community and district information. Next Sunday, September 1st, the next edition of the Centennial Connection will be sent out that will have further details for you about school start up.

As always, the school website and twitter feed are great sources of information. We are working on updating these platforms to provide the most up to date information. The entire LDSB is undergoing a switch in website provider and design and as such, some information may not be updated as quickly as previously as we migrate to the new platform.

We wish all families a wonderful last week of summer holidays and we are looking forward to seeing everyone soon. A reminder that the PA Day is Tuesday September 3rd for staff and that Wednesday September 4th is the first day of school for students.

There is lots of information below - please take a few moments to check it out. A reminder that translation is available in the top right button by clicking "translate" as there are many language options available.

Have a great weekend and week ahead!

What Do I Need For School?

All school supplies that students need for their learning and work will be provided by Centennial Public School. Sometimes students prefer to have their own pencil case with pencils/markers, but it is not a requirement.

Students do need to come to school with:

- Indoor, non-marking athletic type of shoes

- Water bottle with child's name clearly marked as we have bottle filling stations

- Nut-free snacks and lunch

Sometimes students want to bring items to school to show friends, or have things stored in backpacks that need to remain at home. This is just a reminder that students should not bring the following items to school:

- items of value (sentimental or monetary)

- any kind of weapon (for example, a Swiss Army knife)

- any kind of toy that could be a replica weapon (for example, a toy gun)

- electronics of any kind

- jewelry

- make-up

- anything scented (including hand sanitizer, lotions, body spray, chapstick, etc.)

- anything with nuts (please ensure all lunches and snacks are nut-free)

- toys and stuffies (including pokemon cards, lego figures, teddy bears, etc.)

Thank you for keeping these items at home. Sometimes a quick check of a backpack can ensure that treasures do not come to school. Thank you for understanding that we are not responsible for lost, broken or stolen personal items.
