PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - Mr. Melamed PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - Mr. Melamed

September 5, 2025

Dear Nederland Community,

This week, the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) released the School Performance Frameworks (SPF) for all public schools across the state. The SPF functions as a school’s report card, measuring academic achievement, academic growth, and postsecondary and workforce readiness.

I’m proud to share that for the 2024–2025 school year, Nederland Middle-Senior High School earned its highest rating ever since the current SPF system was introduced in 2019. We earned 78.4% of the possible points—an exceptional outcome that reflects the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our entire staff.

Highlights from the SPF:

  • Exceeds rating in academic achievement on the PSAT/SAT English Language Arts

  • Exceeds rating in academic growth on the PSAT/SAT in both English Language Arts and Mathematics

While we celebrate this progress, the SPF also highlights areas for continued focus—most notably, academic growth and achievement among students eligible for free or reduced lunch. In addition, we recognize that our overall achievement and growth still lag behind Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) averages.

Moving forward, we are implementing two key strategies:

  1. Strengthening Universal Instruction
We are supporting our teachers through monthly professional development and instructional coaching to ensure high-quality instruction in every classroom, leading to greater student growth and achievement.

  2. Building a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
MTSS is a proactive approach to ensure that every student receives the academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and attendance support they need to thrive. On Tuesday afternoon, our teachers began this important work by collaborating to plan next steps in developing a strong MTSS framework.

I look forward to sharing more about our progress in these areas throughout the school year.

In my next Panther Post, I’ll discuss two additional priorities:

  • Expanding high school opportunities through Career and Technical Education (CTE), student leadership, and workplace internships.

  • Developing a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system at the middle school level to teach, model, and reinforce positive behaviors, fostering a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.

That’s all for this week. As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Best,
Caleb

Youth Exploring Stewardship (YES) Coalition

The Youth Exploring Stewardship (YES) Coalition is hosting its annual YES Conference on Saturday, October 11 – Sunday, October 12, 2025, at the Cal-Wood Education Center near Jamestown, CO.

This FREE event brings together high school students from across the Colorado Front Range who are involved in stewardship organizations for a one- or two-day leadership experience. It’s a chance for youth to:

  • Engage in hands-on stewardship and outdoor career activities in small groups

  • Explore academic and career opportunities in conservation and environmental leadership

  • Build leadership skills, make new friends, and just have fun outside!

The conference is youth-led and youth-centered—participants help shape the agenda, making it inclusive, authentic, and impactful.

The YES Conference is SO much fun—it honestly feels like summer camp! You’ll spend time playing games, roasting marshmallows, enjoying delicious food, playing gaga, going for a hike, and more.

Why this matters:

  • It’s a hands-on, energizing event that helps youth explore real-world stewardship paths

  • It’s completely free, including overnight lodging—making it easy to say yes

  • Your participation supports your own growth while uplifting others in our community

Next Steps:

Just email allison@teensinc.org and let her know:

  • Are you interested in joining?

  • Do you need help with transportation to Cal-Wood?

  • Will you be staying overnight, or just attending for the day?

Thanks for considering this opportunity to make a tangible impact. Allison would love to have you join them in shaping the next generation of environmental stewards! If you’re curious but unsure, feel free to reach out—Allison is happy to answer any questions or talk it through.

Free Dental Care

Colorado Mission of Mercy (COMOM) is a nonprofit organization that hosts a large-scale, two-day free dental clinic in a different Colorado community each year. Since 2007, COMOM has served more than 20,000 patients and provided over $18 million in donated dental services.

The clinics are open to anyone in need and are held in large venues—such as schools or event centers—that they transform into fully functional, 125-chair dental facilities. Over two days, patients receive cleanings, fillings, root canals, extractions, dentures, and ceramic crowns—all at no cost. This effort is made possible through the support of nearly 200 volunteer dentists, along with hygienists, assistants, lab technicians, healthcare professionals, and hundreds of community volunteers. Beyond relieving pain, they restore oral health and appearance—helping patients regain confidence, dignity, and even employment opportunities.

This year, the clinic will be held in Loveland at The Ranch on October 17–18. They expect to serve more than 1,600 patients with the help of over 2,000 volunteers. Because of Loveland’s proximity, this could be a valuable resource for many BVSD students and families.
