Learning about Teaching Science from the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic shows the critical need for all students to learn science. They must be prepared for a lifetime of science decisions, including some very serious ones. This course is designed to guide participants to answer two essential questions:

1) What does living in a pandemic tell us about the need to learn science and how science should be taught?

2) How does teaching the three dimensions of Alabama’s science standards guide a shift to a pedagogy rich in student engagement, deep conceptual understanding, and real-life application?

Audience: 6-12 Teachers

This course will be open from July 6 until July 24 with weekly assignments.

Shaking Up the Learning: From Static to Dynamic

During this course, we will look at the WHY behind moving from static to dynamic teaching using Kasey Bell's book Shake Up Learning. Participants will be assigned specific chapters to read independently before each session. As a group, we will discuss and reflect on the new learning from the text. Participants will be equipped with the knowledge of what effective integration looks like in a dynamic learning environment by identifying shifts needed to move from a static to a dynamic learning environment. There will be an option to participate in a continued virtual book study of Shake Up Learning by Kasey Bell.

Secondary Science Lab Safety

The three-dimensional nature of our Alabama COS Standards emphasizes student-centered investigations that foster problem-solving, reasoning, data collection, and discovery. Science teachers have the responsibility of planning safe student-centered investigations that address the three dimensions of scientific and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas. This online course is designed to provide secondary science teachers with a strong foundation in laboratory safety to help them safely facilitate these investigations.

Exploring Fractions through Virtual Manipulatives

During this hands-on session, you will learn ways to help students develop a conceptual understanding of fraction concepts using virtual manipulatives in a fun and engaging way. We will explore ways to deepen students' fractional reasoning using virtual tools to help students make meaningful connections, clarify ideas, and build fraction sense. Virtual manipulatives cannot take the place of physical manipulation in the classroom, so we will use tools such as Cuisenaire rods, pattern blocks, etc. that are accessible to teachers, but using a virtual format.

Vertical Progression of Multiplication Using Visual Models

High engagement of teachers and students in Effective Teaching Practices and Student Mathematical Practices, respectively, will foster the opportunity for students to develop a deep conceptual understanding of multiplication and develop multiplicative reasoning.
The necessity for engagement in these practices will become clear as we walk through the progression of how multiplicative reasoning develops using concrete manipulatives, pictorial representations, and numerical equations. The importance of students recognizing these connections among the representations and connections across the grade levels will be evident during this session.

Counting Collections Through the Elementary Years

Counting is fundamental to learning mathematics in elementary school. It supports the development of a deep understanding of number, providing the core foundation for understanding place value, how numbers are composed and decomposed, and how they are related to one another. This deep understanding of numbers allows students to operate on them in powerful ways. This session helps teachers understanding counting and its application across elementary grades as well as develop tools, strategies, and routines that support this deep understanding of numbers through counting.

Building Numerical Understanding and Reasoning

Strategies for mastering concepts and skills are essential for success in mathematics. Students thrive when they’re able to connect the “why” with the “how” of numbers and operations. Those connections equip students to apply numerical reasoning to solve problems. Join us in this session to learn three strategies that every teacher can use as they implement the AL Math Standards.

No Child Left Inside

In this session, participants will explore different ways to engage students and families in outdoor inquiry during this time of remote teaching and learning. Outdoor learning solves significant problems that teachers are currently facing including space to provide in-person instruction with new social distancing guidelines, fresh air, and ventilation and expanded access to in-person instruction, especially for disadvantaged students for whom the remote learning experience has at times been less than ideal. Teaching and learning outdoors also, improves outcomes, supports independent problem solving, engages the community, and most importantly, is fun!

Makerspace @Home

The session provides teachers, parents, and students with inspiration to make things at home with tools and materials that are commonly available in most households. Each activity takes less than 10 minutes and connects directly to virtual labs, interactives, and lesson materials found in the DE service. Aimed at the democratization of making each activity shows that it is not necessary to own a 3D printer or laser cutter to participate in making, The approach is also novel because it is aimed at making wonder the impetus for wanting to know and learn more which is the highest standard of inquiry.

Using Phenomena to Engage Students in Science

What is Phenomena and what makes it engaging? By centering science education on phenomena that students are motivated to explain, the focus of learning shifts from learning about a topic to figuring out why or how something happens and connects that learning to the natural world. Explore example phenomena-based lessons as we share resources to get you started on building your own phenomena-based science lessons.
