A Spoonful of Frogs
Leila the Perfect Witch
Leila is extraordinary and excels at all sorts of witchy endeavors. She’s the fastest flyer, most cunning conjurer, and craftiest carver in her coven. Her bedroom teems with trophies, but her big dream is to win The Magnificent Witchy Cake-Off. Baking is a family legacy, and Leila has high hopes for success. Contrary to her previous ventures, mastering the “Dark Arts of Patisserie” is a skill that evades Leila. Worried that she’ll disappoint her family, she forgoes fun times with her sisters and instead focuses on making the perfect pastry. After her attempts fail, she accepts help from her sisters and enjoys the time they spend together. The competition tests Leila, and although the outcome isn’t what she hoped for, she realizes that sharing the experience with her family and having their support are even more important wins. Loaded with visual humor and quirky details, this whimsical tale charms and delights.
The Skull (short chapter book)
As the story begins, we meet Otilla, a young tan-skinned girl on the run from her old life, who stumbles upon a large house with a single occupant: a talking skull. The two strike up an immediate friendship, and when the skull confesses that a headless skeleton chases him every night, Otilla is determined to come to his aid. Keen ingenuity on her part protects her new friend, and a happy ending sees the two of them together always. Klassen balances the spooky elements of the story brilliantly alongside cozy teas and the occasional waltz. This is aided in no small part by a limited palette that depicts the slanted burnt umber rays of the rising and setting sun as well as the gentle gleam of candlelight.
Click, Clack, Boo!

Drago offers a story about being yourself and finding your community, strikingly illustrated in a distinctive, detailed art style influenced by her Mexican heritage.

They are small universes of their own teeming with critters and creatures of the ocean.
