An Update from Jason

Hello All,

I hope you are well, had a lovely weekend, stayed warm, and had an opportunity to rest and relax. I hope it was a fantastic show for those who attended the UES Lip Sync Battle! And I hope you all had an opportunity to get outside on Sunday when at least the sun was out shining.

This weekend, I went and saw my dad; he had fully recovered from an earlier fall in the winter. Renee and I had an opportunity to walk in Hubbard Park and do the usual chores to keep life running.

This is the last week of semester 1. Please communicate to students who are being called back for Wrap-Up Days. Be sure to call students back in the adaptive scheduler, and if you need any assistance, please let us know.

Grades Close on February 2nd. And will be locked on February 5th. Once that process happens, with Diana's help, MHS will mail home Semester 1 report cards. The mailing will include a letter home to seniors who are off track for graduation- followed by a meeting to get back on track. A letter to students in grades 9-11 who failed a course at S1, and we may need to meet or work with the student/caregivers to adjust their schedule. And a letter about student attendance that every student will receive, reminding both students and caregivers about the importance of being on time and attending classes. Thank you to Nick, Leslie, Kathryn, and Emily for their work on student attendance and to Diana for all her work to have a rather large mailing go home.

Finally, a few weeks ago, we asked one another about one word you had to focus on as a resolution or focus for Semester 2. January 19th is nearly the day everyone generally gives up on their New Year's Eve resolution. Now might be a good time to reflect and see what we can do to continue, one step and day at a time.

Have a great new week. Thank you for a smooth semester, and looking forward to our continued work together.

Sincerely,

Jason

"There is great power in honoring the reality of our current emotions, not feeding them or making them worse, but simply recognizing that this is what has arisen in this present moment and that this will also change. When we create this space within ourselves, a space of calmness that is undisturbed by the storm, the storm tends to pass more quickly. Practicing such profound honesty within ourselves helps in all facets of internal and external life—there is no real freedom without honesty, and without honesty, there can be no peace of mind."

Reminders:

  • If you have a student attending your SB who was not signed up with you, PLEASE assign them to your SB immediately so that the attendance can be accurate.
And, if you have a TA student called back to a different teacher, please advise that student where to go.
  • A reminder from Sylvia and myself- For those of you wishing to expand your skill set in working with Multilingual Learners, there is a potential 3-credit course to be offered this spring. It's called Making Content Comprehensible for Multilingual Learners and Students with Language Learning Disabilities and it is offered by Hannah Wilson, ML teacher at MSMS, and Paula Gervia, SLP at MSMS. If you don't know them, they are phenomenal educators.

At this point the district is trying to gauge interest in the course, so if you think you might be interested, check out the course description and fill out this survey to indicate your potential interest. It's not a commitment yet.

The course will run March 4 - April 28. Much of the class work will consist of applying course material to your ongoing unit/lesson planning. I feel confident in saying that it will be a great course with immediately-applicable learning.

  • On Wednesday, February 7, we will be hosting a Student Shadow Day at MHS. Students from area schools interested in attending MHS will be here from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. They will have the opportunity to meet with Jason, tour the building with Student Ambassadors, go to a couple of Block 2 classes and attend a closing session with Lissa, Amanda, Matt Mc and Jason. Please welcome them if they arrive at your 2nd Block class.

  • The BIPOC space in room 221 is requesting clothing donations for a screen printing project with clothing to raise funds for the space. We are asking for: T-shirts, long sleeve shirts, Hoodies.
