Grade 1-5 Class Placement Emails Grade 1-5 Class Placement Emails

Class placement emails will come out by 3:30 on Friday, 8/23. Our staff puts a lot of time and energy into class placement and while we do our best to accommodate the variety of needs and requests, it is likely that we can't make every wish come true. The great news is that our school is filled with incredible teachers that will work hard to build a supportive classroom community starting on day 1. If you do not receive an email by 3:30, please check your Junk/Spam folders.

Meet & Greet, Grades 1-5 Meet & Greet, Grades 1-5

Hawks View is excited to welcome our students and families from 4-6pm on Tuesday, August 27th. If students have their supplies, they may bring them this evening, but it is certainly not a requirement. It’s an opportunity to meet your teacher (students will be notified of teacher assignments by 3:30pm on Friday 8/23) and see friends. Please enter the building through the front entrance. Kona Ice will be on site for purchase 4-6pm.

Kindergarten Orientation Information Kindergarten Orientation Information

The beginning of the school year looks a bit different for Kindergarten students as we welcome our newest students. First, you and your incoming Kindergarten student(s) are invited to a 90-minute Kindergarten Orientation session on August 27th. This will be a time for students and their parents/caregivers to meet staff, tour the school, learn about key rules and procedures, and drop off school supplies. You can find kinder information here.

Student Drop-Off/Pick-Up Process Student Drop-Off/Pick-Up Process

Our arrival and dismissal procedures are located here, along with a video here. Please review them prior to the first day of school. This will help us keep traffic moving smoothly and allow us to get kids into the building safely and on time. A few important things to note that will help our traffic flow:

  1. Cars will enter and exit through the District Office driveway. We close off the HV driveway to avoid traffic moving in a variety of directions and causing a back up in our parking lot and on Sherwood Blvd.

  2. As a reminder, please do not get out of your vehicle in the car line. If you need to get out for any reason, we ask that you pull into a nearby parking spot and unload that way.

  3. For pick-up, kids will receive signs that go in the passenger side window for pick up. The sign indicates student name & teacher name. This will help our staff quickly identify the child and bring them to the car.

  4. Our car line for K-2 runs along the side of the building (see slides above). We ask that the front car pulls as far forward as possible, near the Activities Entrance. We will not be loading from behind the cross walk in our parking lot. We’ll load in the area between the crosswalk and the Activities Entrance. We ask that you also unload (for morning drop off) in this area only. This is to ensure student safety and to allow our car line to move efficiently. Thank you!

Attendance Attendance

Expectations

Regular attendance is expected of all students. For detailed expectations, please see the Sherwood Student Body Handbook, page 7, for complete information.

Absence Notification

Parents who keep their children at home on a school day should call the office between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. If we do not hear from a parent by 9:00 am, the absence reporting system will contact the parent. Please call our 24 hour student absence line at 503-825-5410. With parents’ cooperation, we can assure each child’s security.

When reporting a student absence on the attendance line, please include the following information: Student name, parent/guardian name, student’s teacher, date of absence, reason for absence and a phone number where the parent/guardian can be reached.

Tardies

The school day starts at 7:55 am. Late arrivals will need to check into the office and receive a tardy slip before heading to class. When students enter the classroom late, it causes a disruption to the learning environment for everyone. It is essential that all children arrive at school on time and ready to learn. Our team will monitor and address attendance throughout the year and communicate with families.

Student Medications Student Medications

If your child needs medication at school (EpiPen’s, Inhalers, etc.) you may check them in during office hours (7:30-3:30) to avoid the first morning rush. The office will be open for medication check in during the Meet & Greet on Tuesday, August 27th as well, for your convenience. Forms will be available in the office if needed.

If your child needs to take medication during school hours, we would like to remind you of some important safety policies:

♦ Parents must bring medication (Prescription or OTC) to and from school. Students are not allowed to transport medication of any kind.

♦ Medication must be in the original container.

♦ Your child’s name must be affixed to the original container.

♦ Prescriptions must have appropriate pharmacy labeling.

♦ Medications must not be expired.

♦ Appropriate medication authorization forms (see below) MUST be filled out and submitted to the school office before any medication can be administered.

Note: It is the parent's responsibility to ensure that an adequate amount of medication is on hand and to inform the school in writing of any changes in medication instructions. In the event a student refuses medication; the parent will be notified immediately. No attempt will be made to administer medication to a student who refuses district-administered medication. School health forms, including medication authorization forms, can be found on our district website: www.sherwood.k12.or.us under “Health Services” and “Forms.”

“Authorization for Medication Administration by School Staff” must be submitted for any medication use during school hours. All forms must be filled out and signed by appropriate staff before medication can be given.

Cell Phone Expectations Cell Phone Expectations

As we start the school year, we would like to share a quick reminder about our elementary school cell phone policy. Cell phones at the elementary level need to be away "Door to Door." Students with cell phones will need to put them away in their backpack prior to entering the school building, and they will need to remain away in backpacks until students leave the building at the end of the school day.

Smart watches are allowed at school, as long as they are not used as a cellular device. If students are using watches to call or text at school, they will be asked to put their watch in their backpack for the remainder of the day.

If students are not following the cell phone or smartwatch policies, they will receive a warning and reminder to put them away in their backpack. If future incidents occur, the phone/watches will be collected and stored in the office or with the teacher until the end of the day. Parents may be asked to come pick up watches/phones if there are incidences beyond that point.

As a reminder for all personal devices, the school is not responsible for lost, broken, or stolen devices. If families are concerned about these items, we encourage them to keep personal devices at home.

The above information is also noted in our Hawks View Parent Handbook Addendum. We appreciate your help in ensuring that our students have a school environment that is free of distractions and supportive of learning!
