The Howler: October 24, 2026
Ottauquechee School News
Message from the Principal
How will OQS fare on the State's Report Card?
State testing results are expected at the end of October, but we know our work to improve student outcomes is ongoing. Our teachers and staff are working hard to build on what’s going well, review beginning-of-year assessment data and student needs, and strengthen the systems that support every learner’s growth. We know there is more work ahead, and we remain committed to continuous improvement and meaningful outcomes for all students.
Stay tuned for details about a community forum in mid-to-late November, where we’ll share how we’re focusing our approach to teaching and learning and keeping student growth at the center of our work. There's a role for you all in this work and we're excited to partner with you!
Fall Conferences on Monday Nov. 2nd and Tuesday, Nov. 3rd
Fall conferences sign ups have gone out. Please connect with your child(ren)'s teacher(s) at OQS to make sure you have a time slot set aside to meet and see how things are going so far this year.
The purpose of these conferences is to check in about what students have been working on, how students are being supported to take the next steps in their learning and to do some reflecting on the start of the year as well as what lies ahead.
Several teachers may be inviting students to their conferences to share some of their work with you. Remember that this looks different at every grade level as students are learning the many skills necessary to be meaningful participants in these moments.
We look forward to sharing this time with you! Reach out if you have any questions.
Colder Weather Is Upon Us...
Brrrrrrrr! Mornings are COLD! Please send your children ready to be on the playground in layers, hats, and gloves or mittens. Layers are still where it's at as the afternoons have been gorgeous!
Students will continue to spend time outside on the playground before school if they are not eating breakfast, throughout the year as long as weather permits—when the real-feel temperature is above zero and conditions are safe. Students will not go to the cafeteria just because it's cold out.
Fresh air and movement are great ways to get brains and bodies ready for a productive day of learning, so please help your child come prepared to be outside. If your family needs support with cold-weather gear, please reach out—we’re happy to help!
Warmly, (no pun intended)

Budgeting Season
Budgeting Season is rife with some new and very challenging constraints. I urge you all to pay attention to what's happening and share your voice.
Attached here are presentations that have been shared at the board meetings about what we're up against.
Additionally, please take the Budget Survey if you have not already done so (see QR code below). Share it with other community members.
If you have additional thoughts you'd like to share, please contact the school board directly at schoolboard@hartfordschools.net.

SNACK Team Updates (SEL Work)
PBIS Refresher Take Aways:
Our first meeting with BEST Project Director, Amy Wheeler-Sutton was very productive and yielded important action steps related to the goals we had outlined:
1. Creating a Consistent, Positive School Experience All staff play a role in helping students feel safe, supported, and successful by teaching and reinforcing shared Wolf Way expectations throughout the school.
Action Steps:
- Calibrate collective definitions of interfering behaviors
- Review our logical consequences flow chart
- Complete training survey to better understand the capacity among our staff
2. Using Data to Better Support Students Staff work together to understand student needs, recognize what’s working, and make thoughtful changes that strengthen our school community.
Action Steps:
- Establish clear focus and routine for SNACK team data review
- Schedule data sharing with the Wolf Way Committee to inform our school-wide approaches to culture and climate building
We look forward to sharing our work along the way!
The Wolf Way!
Celebrating our Wolf Way Character Strengths:
In the first six weeks of school, all members of our community reviewed the character strengths that make up the Wolf Way: Respect, Perseverance, Awareness, Courage, Kindness and Joy! Now that the first six weeks are behind us, classes will take a deeper dive into how we live the character strengths in practice, taking a month for each.
This month, all community members will be focused on RESPECT.

Curiosity Corner
Diwali (duh-vaa-lee) is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the world, observed by millions of Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists. This year, Diwali falls on Sunday, November 8. Often called the "Festival of Lights," it symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. During this time, homes are illuminated with small clay lamps (diyas), vibrant floor patterns (rangoli) are created, and families gather to share sweets, gifts, and prayers.
For many practitioners, Diwali marks the beginning of a new year and is a time to invite prosperity, peace, and auspicious beginnings into the home. Because of its bright visuals, public festivals, and joyful atmosphere, it has become a highly visible anchor for South Asian and Hindu culture globally.
Although Diwali is a major Hindu celebration, it is vital to recognize that Hinduism cannot be simplified into a single representative holiday. Hinduism is a decentralized, pluralistic faith with thousands of years of history. It encompasses a vast spectrum of philosophies, regional cultures, and distinct lineages. A holiday that is central to one community may look entirely different—or hold less weight—in another.
While Diwali is a massive celebration in North and West India, other regions center their calendars around different festivals. In Kerala (South India), the harvest festival of Onam takes center stage. In West Bengal (East India), Durga Puja is the defining cultural and religious event of the year.
Hinduism includes many different traditions. While Diwali often centers on Lakshmi (the Goddess of Wealth) and Lord Rama, millions of Hindus primarily worship Lord Shiva and hold Maha Shivaratri as their holiest night, or devote themselves to the Divine Feminine during Navaratri.
Acknowledging Diwali is a wonderful step toward cultural appreciation, but it is only an introduction. By celebrating the light of Diwali while remaining curious about the countless other traditions that define the faith, we move away from oversimplification and toward true, meaningful inclusion.
