Professional Development for Staffulty

Last week was an exciting and memorable start to the school year as our teachers wrapped up Professional Development and we welcomed more than 600 Wolverines back into the building. Students were enthusiastic about the upgrades made over the summer, including new classroom furniture and refreshed bathroom mirrors. We also enjoyed a visit from Mr. Kevin Lakin, DD4’s Public Relations Director, who stopped by each school to film “fit checks” and celebrate the return of our incredible students and staff. Make sure that you check that out on Facebook.

Principal Benvin met with each grade level for class meetings to reinforce expectations introduced during Wednesday’s Homeroom sessions. Students reviewed important state mandates related to vaping, altercations, searches, and school safety. They also received their first look at our rebranding efforts. A major focus for the year is punctuality—arriving to class on time is a skill essential for future employment, military service, and post‑secondary education. Principal Benvin also introduced the WolverEEEs, reminding students: “By the time you walk across the stage at graduation, you should have targeted an E—Employed in a career path of your choice, Enlisted in military service, or Enrolled in a college or university.”

On Friday, our Seniors kicked off their final year at Woodland with a beautiful Senior Sunrise event sponsored by the Student Government Association. The number of volunteers who stepped up to support the event made the morning truly special. Seniors will close out their year in May with Senior Sunset, a tradition that bookends their journey. We look forward to watching each of them “Target their E” as they move confidently toward their next chapter.

Across the building and beyond, our programs were already in full swing—football scrimmages, band rehearsals, interest meetings, and more. The momentum is strong, and it’s clear we are heading into an outstanding year.

Go Wolverines. Stay Resilient.

This Week Ahead This Week Ahead

We have an exciting week ahead at Woodland High School as several major events—and our athletic competitions—get underway!

Athletics Kickoff

Join us in cheering on our Wolverines as they travel to represent Woodland with pride:

  • Volleyball — Scrimmage vs. Edisto (Away)
  • Girls’ Tennis — Lady Wolverines vs. Berkeley (Away)
  • Football — Varsity and Junior Varsity competing in the 2026 Showdown at Ashley Ridge High School

Our athletes have been working hard, and this week marks the beginning of an incredible season across all programs.

Freshman Red-Carpet Event

Outside of athletics, we are thrilled to welcome our Freshmen to Woodland High School this Friday morning for our Renaissance Annual Red-Carpet Event. This tradition is a highlight of the year—an opportunity for students to celebrate one another, build community, and enjoy friendly competition through games and activities. It’s always a memorable moment as our newest Wolverines officially step into their high school journey. This is a student‑only event, but we’ll be sure to share photos in next week’s Weekly Wolverine so everyone can enjoy the celebrations and see the incredible work that went into making it special.

School Counseling School Counseling

School Counselors:

  • Mrs. Patricia Duggins: A-Gi
  • Mrs. Queen Bell-Lawton: GL-NE
  • Mrs. Tandy McAlhaney: Ni-Z
  • Ms. Raina Thompson: Career Specialist

The School Counseling Office has been hard at work this past week processing schedule changes. Our three school counselors have been moving quickly through all submitted add/drop forms to ensure students receive the adjustments they truly need. Please remember that schedule changes are not made for preferences such as switching lunch periods, joining a friend’s class, or avoiding a particular teacher. Schedule changes are reserved for students who have empty periods, duplicate courses, or other issues that prevent them from having a complete and accurate schedule.

Tuesday, August 11th will be the final day for students to submit add/drop forms.

Dual Enrollment courses will begin on Monday, August 17th, and final location details are being confirmed this week. If your student is enrolled in a Dual Enrollment course but does not have class on a particular day—sometimes outside instructors cancel sessions—it is still essential that they report to school as scheduled in PowerSchool.

State Mandates and Grading Scale

State Mandates Update

The following items were addressed in the Meet the Principal Night regarding the updated state mandates for the school year:

  1. Grade Floors - Beginning this school year, the South Carolina Department of education has eliminated the grading floor. As a result, grades will more accurately reflect each student's demonstrated learning and academic performance, ensuring that grading practices align with state expectations and academic standards.
  2. Content/Credit Recovery - In order for a student to be eligible to participate in a district-approved content recovery program, a student must have completed all required assignments for the relevant area of the course in a manner consistent with district policies for timely submission of student work.
