Message from Principal Sledge Message from Principal Sledge

In April, we will focus on Habit 7 of Leader in Me, Sharpen the Saw. Sharpen the Saw means to have balance in your life. With the OST's quickly approaching it is very important for our students to have balance in their lives. Many factors contribute to how a student performs on the Ohio State Tests. There are a number of things that you can do at home to help your student prepare; you can make sure your student has a calm environment, especially during testing weeks, balanced meals, plenty of rest, exercise, and time to unwind. For some, testing can be stressful. We have included in this newsletter a link to the Ohio Department of Education's website so that you can easily access all information related to the OST's. Staying up to date with important information, communicating with teachers, and encouraging your student to do their best will prepare them for testing success.

Total Solar Eclipse Total Solar Eclipse

On Monday, April 8th, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. It is very important to be as safe as possible when viewing the total solar eclipse. The Springfield City School District has provided total solar eclipse glasses to each of our students provided by the Clark County Combined Health District. Students will be bringing the glasses home this week.

Leader In Me Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

Sharpen the Saw means to have balance in your life. There is a story of a man who was sawing down a tree and not making a lot of progress. When a passerby asked him why he didn't stop sawing to sharpen his saw, he remarked that he was too busy sawing. Habit 7 reminds us that we are more productive when we are in balance- body, brain, heart, and soul. Just like the four tires on a car, if one area is being ignored or overused, the rest will feel the results. For young children, the car analogy is one they understand; a car could not go on fewer than all four tires. Explain the four parts of each person (body, brain, heart, and soul) and how important it is to take care of each part to make them all work better.

Try this at home:

1. Develop a Sharpen the Saw activity center in your home. Include arts-and-crafts supplies, learning games, puzzles, classical music, books, etc.

2. Discuss various ways to Sharpen the Saw in all areas. Ideas might include: body (playing outside, riding your bike), brain (balancing reading with TV watching or making smarter choices about what you watch), heart (making a list of what makes you happy and doing something on the list every day, spending time with special friends and family), and soul (attending religious services, starting a journal).

3. Read inspiring books which include: Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late! by Mo Willems, Owl Moon, by Jane Yolen, The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats, Henry Hikes to Fitchburg by D. B. Johnson, and Me, I Am! by Jack Prelutsky.

4. Read Chapter 7 of The 7 Habits of Happy Kids book with your child and then complete the Parent's Corner.

Students receive PBIS points for being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. Students also receive PBIS points for attendance. Each month, classroom time is set aside for students to shop our online PBIS store where they are able to use their points to purchase items of their choice. Some items include bouncy balls, spinning bracelets, cotton candy, freshly popped popcorn, extra recess, high fives with Mr. Holliday, and fine dining. Our fine dining has received a 10/10 rating from our fourth grade students!

Our attendance data shows that we have the most absences on Monday's and Friday's. Please encourage your student to attend school each day and to be here on time.

On Friday, March 15th, our students who qualified with the required amount of PBIS points, received their reward. Students got movie time with the huge screen projector provided by Parent Club. Students also got to choose between nacho's and cheese or fresh popped popcorn with M&M's.

Read Across America Week

In our Library, For Read Across America Week, we’ve been pretending we’re camping! Mrs. Greene, our librarian, made some “tents” out of sheets and tables in the library. She put on some “outdoor sounds” on the big screen, and K-3 students read in their “tents." The students had so much fun with it!

First Grade, Ms. Howell's Class

These are the final products of the first grade students in Ms. Howell's class group collaborative art projects. The group projects were an extension to the writing and study of a text from Wit & Wisdom called, What Do You Do With a Tail Like This? Students used the same technique the illustrator used to create the illustrations in the book and they created collages of two creatures that did something unique with one of their features (mouths, eyes, ears, tails, noses). Students were given directions and supplies but the rest was up to them! They had to practice the habit of synergy to plan and divide the work over the course of 5 days. They also had some help from older leaders in the building. Shout out to 4th and 6th grade! They are very proud of their hard work.
