Dear Collins Intermediate Families,
Happy September! We have truly enjoyed our first three weeks of school and are looking forward to a wonderful new month of learning, growing, and belonging together!
As always, please know that we are here to support you and your child. If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to reach out—we are happy to help!
🌧️ Rainy Day Dismissal Reminder
We are keeping an eye on the potential for some heavy weather this week. If your child is a bike rider or walker, please take a few minutes to review our Rainy Day Dismissal procedures below so everyone knows what to expect if weather impacts dismissal.
Thank you for helping us keep our students safe!
Have a great rest of your week, Cobras, and enjoy your amazing three-day weekend!
Take care,
Chelsea Harness
Principal, Collins Intermediate
RAINY DAY DISMISSAL
Dismissal in Bad Weather
In the event of inclement or severe weather, be sure to check your email for updates on whether or not we will have rainy day dismissal.
If there is extreme weather (wind, hail, lightning, extreme rain) predicted to occur at 4:05 PM we will not allow students to walk or bike ride home - parents can join the car line, or walk up to the door by the 5th grade bike rack and check your child out with a staff member (please have car rider sign).
Every parent should have a car rider sign, and it should be visible in the car rider line. If you are picking up additional students due to rainy day dismissal, please write each student’s ID number as large as possible on a piece of paper. Families without the car rider signs and without the student ID slows the process down substantially.
We will do our best to make a "Rainy Day Dismissal" decision by 3:45PM to alert families of the change. Please have a "Plan B" established with your child so they will know how they are getting home when a "Rainy Day Dismissal" is called.
🚗 Car Line Etiquette: Help Us Keep Dismissal Moving!
We appreciate your patience and partnership as we work to make dismissal safe, smooth, and efficient for everyone! Please keep these car line expectations in mind:
- Have your car rider sign visible on your dashboard. This helps our staff quickly and safely identify your student. If you do not have your sign, you will be asked to pull through to the 5th Grade Bike Rack to verify your information. Please expect a delay. This delays your own child coming out and can also create a backup in the car line.
- Please do not cut in front of other cars. Cutting into the line disrupts the established order and makes it more difficult for our staff to safely manage dismissal.
- There are NO left turns into Collins from Shadowbend during dismissal. Please follow the designated traffic pattern and enter the car line at the end.
We know dismissal can be busy, and we truly appreciate your continued patience, cooperation, and respect for our staff and student safety. Following these simple expectations helps us get every Cobra home safely and as quickly as possible!
Early Check Out During Lunch/Recess
To help us get your child to you as quickly as possible during early check-outs, please avoid picking up students during their scheduled lunch and recess times. Locating students and gathering their belongings while they are on the playground or in the cafeteria can cause significant delays at the front desk.
If you need to sign your child out early, please try to schedule your pickup before or after their grade level's lunch/recess block:
5th Grade Lunch & Recess: 11:40 AM – 12:20 PM
6th Grade Lunch & Recess: 12:30 PM – 1:10 PM
Thank you for your cooperation and assistance in keeping our school day running smoothly!
Helping Your Child Stay Organized
Organization is a learned skill at this age, and we’re building it together!
- Ask: “What do you have due this week?”. Use the planner or LC newsletter to plan out your week together.
- Help your child break projects and larger assignments into steps (such as 15 minutes at a time or one step each day).
- Check for missing work in Home Access Center in the Parent Portal, and hold your child accountable at home for zeros.
- Encourage your child to pack their own backpack each night to prepare for the next morning.
💡 Students are expected to track assignments using their planner and check their grades on Student Access Center regularly. A quick weekly check (5–10 minutes) can prevent missing assignments and stress.
Collins PTO Membership Drive
Dear Collins Intermediate Families,
Collins PTO is pleased to welcome you to a new school year at Collins Intermediate! We’re excited to kick off another great year full of learning, growth, and fun, and we’d love for you to be a part of it!
Collins PTO plays an important role in supporting our students, teachers, and the school community as a whole. PTO provides funding for supplies and resources used in classrooms, pays for and coordinates yearly field trips, and hosts fun events throughout the year for our students. Collins PTO is always working behind the scenes to make our school a special place for our kids!
We invite YOU to join the PTO this year!
Whether you have a little time, a lot, or none at all, there are many ways to support our school community. No time commitment is necessary to join the PTO, just a donation in the form of a yearly membership makes a difference! Your participation, big or small, helps us continue to provide memorable experiences and meaningful support for every student and teacher at Collins.
Plus, we’re kicking things off with a fun Membership Drive!
The top two homerooms in each grade with the percentage of the most parents signed up for the PTO by SEPTEMBER 5TH will win a PIZZA PARTY with extra recess! Winning classroom teachers will receive a $35 gift card. Please make sure to fill out your child’s teacher information when you sign up, and if you’ve already signed up, make sure to double check that you’ve filled in your child’s name and homeroom teacher. Together, we can build a stronger Collins!
With gratitude,
Collins Intermediate PTO
Any students not clear from previous years will not be allowed to check out library books from Collins' library until their record is cleared. If your student owes books to another campus, return them to Collins' librarian and she will mail them to their home campus. If they are lost or damage, they must be paid for. Acceptable forms of payment are: cash in the EXACT amount (schools cannot make change), checks made payable to the book(s)' home campus, with DOB and DL# on check, or let the books' home campus librarian know that you wish to pay with a credit card. Then the campus secretary can put the transaction on your student's school cash online account. The campus secretary will notify the librarian once payment is received. Thank you for taking care of your CISD library record!
INTEGRITY
Guidance lessons will begin the week of September 14th and will occur during student's library time. Our focus this month will be on our September character trait which is INTEGRITY: Doing what you are supposed to do - Thinking before you act - Being accountable for your actions - Being a good friend.

Collins Clubs
🎉 Collins Club Applications
We’re excited to share that some club applications are still open at bit.ly/collinsclubs26! Please note that while several clubs are actively accepting new members, others have already reached maximum capacity, had an earlier due date, or are now full.
As a reminder, clubs are a wonderful way for students to get involved, meet new people, and build valuable life skills. We want club participation to be a primary opportunity for our students to practice independence, responsibility, and initiative.
Please support your child by encouraging them to be the one who:
Learns about open clubs through morning announcements and school updates.
Completes and submits their own application.
Communicates directly with club sponsors using their student email if they have questions.
Keeps track of meeting dates and important announcements.
We kindly ask that parents refrain from reaching out to club sponsors on their child’s behalf. Instead, we ask for your partnership in encouraging your child to ask questions, seek out information, and advocate for themselves independently. Practicing self-advocacy in a supportive environment is one of the most important benefits of joining a school club!
Students will continue to receive information about available clubs at school. We’re excited to see our Cobras get involved, practice leadership, and take ownership of their school experience! 🐍
We wrapped up our Badminton unit this week. There was a lot of growth to celebrate! We love watching them compete and cheer each other on. We are looking forward to beginning our Volleyball unit next week. We will begin with skills and lead up to games. As always, you are always welcome to bring a water bottle to PE. Please leave all key chains, purses, and lanyards in your classroom or backpack. Thank you and stay active, Cobras!
- In Mrs. Williams’ art class we are working with clay. Students are exploring how to use a variety of tools, practicing different techniques for working with clay, mapping out their designs and beginning their final clay project.
- In Mr. Hunt's class, students are working on their drawing skills and are learning about artist Chuck Close and the grid method.
- If you have not already done so please pay the art/music fee through your school cash online account. This fee will purchase the supplies your student will need throughout the school year in both art and music. Students are welcome to bring their own art supplies to supplement what is provided by Collins but it is in no way required. Happy drawing!
Hello Orchestra Families! I am so excited to begin this next year with your students whether they are returning or starting their new adventure. The Orchestra Fee and Cello/Bass Maintenance fee will be available on SchoolCashOnline.
Hey Band Families!
We have had an AMAZING first couple weeks in band! By now we are all in the swing of practicing and you should be hearing some amazing first sounds (5th grade) or some smooth scales (6th grade) at home. Remember that practice records are due online every Monday and can be found in your student’s email.
If you have any extra AAA batteries around the house, please consider donating them to the Collins Band program! Each student should have a tuner/met that they use in class daily and these use AAA batteries. Having extra on hand ensures we have smooth transitions when the batteries give out on their tuners!
Important Information❗
School Cash Online: If your child is in Art/Music, Band, Choir, or Orchestra SCO items will be posted to your account in the coming weeks once all schedules are set. If your students is using a school issued instrument for Band or Orchestra, you should have already received a notification for the yearly instrument maintenance fee. Robotics or other clubs with an associated fee will be added once teams have been set.
