Learning Through Exploration

This week in Kindergarten we spent a lot of time exploring our new school! On the first day of school we read ‘The Kissing Hand.’ Chester the racoon left us a trail of his footprints to take us on a tour around the school. Students got to see where we will eat lunch, the library, and all the different classrooms. Once we got back to our room Chester was there to greet us with hearts to make our own kissing hands. I’m excited to see students continue to learn and explore this year!

My Mouth is a Volcano!!

We have had a great first week in 1/2. We took tons of pictures, practiced routines and procedures, read a few stories and did a fun activity with toothpaste!

We read ‘My Mouth is a Volcano!’ This story talked about interrupting and how hurtful words can be. After reading the story, we did an activity with toothpaste and toothpicks. We squeezed all of the toothpaste out of the tube and then we had to use a toothpick to try to get it all back in the tube. Very quickly, the students figured out how hard it was to get the toothpaste back in. At the end, we reflected on both the story and the activity and everyone agreed that getting the toothpaste back in was impossible and we need to think before we speak! I cannot wait to see what the rest of the year brings!

What a Great Week!

It’s been a fantastic start to third and fourth grade! Students have been practicing routines and working together as a team to listen and contribute to each other's ideas. We've also begun exploring large numbers and have started learning cursive—so far, we’ve mastered the letters 'c,' 'a,' and 'd.' It’s exciting to see the progress already!

Creativity: Getting There

Our artists arrived ready to roll! They are drawing and painting to discover and share their ideas for the year ahead!

As we focus on creativity and stewardship we will continue to develop the skills and strategies that help us imagine and make while we share and care.

This week we found inspiration from the work of Matt Patterson of Hancock, NH. The students were delighted by his love for wildlife. We will continue to look to local artists for ideas throughout the year. Please let me know if you or someone you know would like to share their craft. A short video recording or a few photos of your work may be the spark to motivate a student’s creative journey.

Thank you for supporting creativity!

Setting Ourselves up for Success!

here is a wonderful beginning to our school day!

It is our Morning Meeting, and it lasts about twenty minutes each day right after morning recess.

After gathering in a circle, we begin by greeting each other by name in a friendly and cheerful way. Next, the students have a chance to share any new and exciting events with the class. This allows them to work on their speaking and listening skills. After sharing, there is an activity for the whole class. We might sing a song, read a poem, play a math game, or do some other activity. This allows the students to work together and problem solve as a whole group while having fun! The last part of our meeting is called Morning Message. During this time, students connect to the previous day’s learning, and think about the day ahead. They read the chart together or individually which allows them to practice reading/speaking skills. We also “work” the chart, which means that we use the chart for learning. We may practice reading, language, or math skills.

The Morning Meeting is a great way to build community, increase excitement about learning, and improve academic and social skills.

Come Join our FES PTO

Another summer is coming to a close and the FES staff are hard at work preparing for another fun year of learning. The FES PTO have been working to put together amazing programs to enrich the school year. We have the always popular pumpkin carving on Halloween and Crazy 8s in the winter. There will be the return of some past favorites such as after school hiking along with a few new surprises! Of course none of this happens without a little fundraising. Look for info about a color fun run and fall festival, the return of the Holiday Fair with a twist and the super fun Valentines Dance. We will try to keep families up to date about all of the activities through email and our Facebook page. If you are interested in becoming involved with the PTO, please reach out! We can't make these programs happen without family and community involvement.

Fundraiser

There are many ways to get involved with the PTO. We are reviving our mum sale! Order mums and support the PTO activities. With the retirement of our long time administrative assistant, Mrs. Ford, the position has been reimagined as part time. This means that FES could use parent volunteers to help in the office on Fridays. If you are interested, please see the SignUp Genius link below. One final note, we have parents that could use the help of other parents for before and after school child care. We are working on a community solution, in the meantime if you are able to help other parents, please reach out to the school or PTO.
