Setting and Goals and making Progress

Dear Elmore School Families,

Its hard to believe that we have completed our fourth week of school. We began the week with a focus on setting goals. Students each identified something they want to learn about this year or improve on this year, then each student shared their Hopes and Dreams (their goal) on a thought bubble. In art Students started drawing self portraits. Their hopes and dreams will be displayed with their self portraits. Be sure to check them out on Thursday when you visit our Open House!

We had our second week of spelling practice. Students are put into differentiated groups, based on their needs. This week the groups practiced words with: short vowels, i,e,u ; applying plural suffixes s, es; applying short vowel suffixes ed, ing, er to base (root) words; and words with open syllables.

We began our next writing unit. In this unit, students will be writing personal narrative. a personal narrative is a story that shares something that happened to you or something you did. The author is the main character. This week students brainstormed and began planning their stories.

During Math this week each grade was working with data. First graders learned about collecting data and shared their data by creating drawings. We looked at tables that shared data and answered questions about the data. Second graders created picture graphs and bar graphs about data and then answered questions about picture graphs and bar graphs. Third graders work on answering questions about scaled graphs. We also continue to add to our math menu routine as each week we are adding new puzzles or activites for students to practice skills.

Students where issued their ipads this week. Second and third graders completed a reading screener known as the MAZE, It is part of the Dibles screeners. Each students also took a Lexia Core 5 placement "test", which will place students at a level which should give them "just right" practice. Next week all students will be taking a STAR Math assessment and 3rd graders will be competing a STAR reading assessment. The data collected from these various assessments will help be plan targeted instruction.

We will have our annual Open house next Thursday, September 25th from 6-7 pm. please feel free to come anytime between 6-7 to view the classroom and see all the things we have been working on the past few weeks! The Open House will end at 7:00 pm so please plan enough time for your visit.
