FGMS Gets a New Voice
We are very happy to introduce choir at Fort Gratiot Middle School! This is an important addition to our curriculum because middle school choir allows a continuation in the vocal pathway that elementary school creates. This further develops a sense of musical literacy, pitch, intonation, rhythm, harmony, self confidence, and many other musical aspects that improves all of our arts. Band and choir share many students and as such, extra exposure to music instruction and different musical contexts create a thorough repertoire of varied experiences.
In high school our students participate in MSVMA Festival which is a choral competition where schools from all over Michigan travel to be scored by an expert panel of adjudicators. The criteria and standards for ratings are the same for any high school no matter the level of experience. That said, without middle school choir, our high school students are coming in with middle school levels of experience and being judged by high school standards. By establishing a middle school choir in the district, we are giving our students the opportunity to even the playing field.
Outside of competitions, PHASD is known for our theater programs. Our students participate in county-wide, and sometimes state-wide, theatrical productions. Having choir in the middle schools is another avenue to further boost the ability of our performers and elevate our already great productions to greater heights at both middle and high school levels.
Finally, one of our missions as a district is to embody the phrase, “Stronger Together”. The middle school choirs have allowed us access to an avenue of collaboration across the district secondary schools and we will be performing in combination with our middle school and high school programs. This will help create and maintain a steady sense of comradery and respect in a district-wide community of music.
