Event Information
What’s the RDL / RDL Jr. Nationals at ETSU?
The Robot Drone League (RDL) and its younger-tier counterpart, RDL Jr., are STEM-focused competitions that challenge student teams to design, build, and operate robots and drones in an engaging, hands-on format. The national championships feature top teams advancing from regional events around the country.
For 2026: Nationals scheduled for March 27 (3 PM–7 PM) and March 28 (8 AM–4 PM), 2026
Format: Students operate on a simulated field (7.3 m x 11.0 m) featuring agricultural zones, water and power elements, and a “mysterious mineshaft” to recover valuable ore—a “Moonbase” themed STEM challenge
Teams: Middle and high school teams compete as alliances (Red vs. Blue), focusing on machine design, programming, and collaborative problem-solving that evokes themes from NASA’s Artemis lunar initiative.
Audience: Admission is free and open to the public.

When it comes down to it, effective instruction for innovative design and deep understanding of technical concepts is all about engagement. It’s been found that when students are directed by an expert to follow a pre-established sequence of instructions, it does very little to encourage them to develop and consider their analytical process. If something is confusing, the resolution is obvious — ask the teacher. However, it’s been shown to be more effective if students create their own solutions to challenges through the practice of seeking varied resources to develop those solutions. The ultimate goal is for students to generate their own novel and innovative solutions to problems. – D. Courtney
