Major Time Schedule
** March is Women's History Month **
'"Women's History Month is an annual observance to highlight the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. Celebrated during March in the United States, Germany, and Australia, corresponding with International Women's Day on March 8, it is observed during October in Canada, corresponding with the celebration of Persons Day on October 18.
A weeklong observance in Sonoma County, California, in 1978 was subsequently championed by Gerda Lerner and the National Women's History Alliance to be recognized as a national week (1980) and then month (1987) in the United States, spreading internationally after that. Since 2005, the annual celebration of Women's History Month in Australia has centered on a different area of women's achievement. Promotional materials and events are focused around the theme and organizations, institutions and community groups are encouraged to use this theme for their own events."
** MVHS is a VMEA Blue Ribbon School **
3rd Time in School History!
Our incredible performing arts programs are excited to announce that today we found out that MVHS has earned the prestigious designation of being a VMEA Blue Ribbon School for the third time in school history (2022, 2024, 2026).
The VMEA Blue Ribbon award is the highest music honor designation that can be bestowed upon a secondary school in the Commonwealth and is only achieved by the top ensembles in band, orchestra, and chorus all achieving ratings of “Superior” at their respective district assessment events.
The MVHS Wind Ensemble (directed by Mr. Richard Bacz), MVHS Advanced Treble Chorus (directed by Mrs. Chelsea Molisso) and MVHS Chamber Orchestra (directed by Mr. Al Rodriguez) not only earned overall ratings of superior, but earned straight superior ratings across the board on stage and sight reading. This is an incredible moment for our students, school, and community.
At Mount Vernon, we wholeheartedly believe that our strong performing arts program is at the heart of our thriving school community. Our teachers shared that "The lessons that music teaches: discipline, collaboration, compromise, goal-setting, and resilience, are skills that our students have that will extend beyond their time at MV and into their futures as citizens of the world."
Our students at MVHS are incredible, and this is just another way we are able to show our community and beyond some of the great things that our students can do.
On behalf of our entire performing arts programs, we want to thank our community for your continuous support of our music program: attending concerts, helping with field trip planning, logistic planning, and the list goes on (and on and on). We are immensely grateful to you for your dedication to this school and to what we do as educators, performers, and community ambassadors. This award is for all of us!
We are currently planning a Blue Ribbon Celebration (and performance showcase) next week for these incredible students.
More information about VMEA Blue Ribbon can be found here: https://www.vmea.com/blue-ribbon-award
Congratulations to all of our amazing teachers and performers!

MVHS DECA Students Explore College & Career Readiness at George Mason University
The Mount Vernon High School DECA chapter recently had the opportunity to attend Career Awareness/College Readiness Day at George Mason University. This experience was made possible through a generous grant supported by the Taco Bell Foundation in partnership with George Mason University Costello College of Business.
Students were welcomed by the National DECA Chief Partnership Director and spent the day engaging with college students from the Costello College of Business and members of the GMU Collegiate DECA chapter.
Throughout the day, students participated in interactive workshops focused on important college and career readiness topics, including paying for college and personal finances presented by Navy Mutual Aid Association, finding the right college fit, and developing student leadership skills.
The event provided valuable insight into college life, financial planning, and leadership development, helping students prepare for future academic and career opportunities.

Strengthening College Readiness: A Request for Community Connections
Dear MVHS Families,
As we work to ensure our students are fully prepared for the transition to higher education, we are reaching out to our community to help bridge the gap between high school and college-level academic expectations. We are currently looking for leads and "feelers" for an upcoming Speaker Series focused on helping our rising seniors navigate the shift in grading rigor, assignment standards, and the personal accountability required at the next level.
If you are a professor or instructor at a two-year or four-year institution, an academic advisor, or have a professional connection to someone who might be interested in sharing their perspective with our students, we would love to hear from you.
At this stage, we are simply looking to identify potential partners within our network who can help our students understand what to expect in a college classroom.
Please reply directly to this email or contact Annie Stewart, amstewart@fcps.edu, if you have a lead or would like to volunteer your expertise.
Thank you for your continued support in setting our students up for long-term success.
Best regards,
Danielle Mascoll

** Prom Clothing Donation Drive **
We are excited to share a wonderful opportunity for our students as prom season approaches. We have partnered with a local nonprofit to ensure that every student has the chance to look and feel their best, regardless of their budget.
The nonprofit will be hosting a prom attire giveaway planned for late March or early April, with the exact date still to be determined. Additionally, they will provide free hair and makeup services here at the school on the day of prom.
While we have already started collecting items, we are hoping to gather additional donations to better support our students.
If you have any new or gently used formal attire—including dresses, suits, shoes, and accessories—please consider bringing them to the MVHS Resource Center for drop-off. The MVHS Parent Resource Center is in the Main Lobby of MVHS.
I have attached a flyer with more details. Please keep these services in mind for any students who may benefit.
Thank you for your time and continued support in making this a memorable event for our students.
