Summer Math & Reading Challenges!
(& Some Additional Notes!)
Introducing the Summer Math & Reading Challenges!
Dear Fabulous Nova Families,
Summer is here – a time for our scholars to have a break from school and spend more time outside and engaging in relaxing activities. It is worth noting that studies show the summer is when our students are at risk to lose some of the academic skills they learned during the school year.
To that end, we are pleased to introduce a Summer Math Challenge and a Summer Reading Challenge! Upon successful completion of each of these challenges, students will earn a certificate for a non-uniform day when we return to school! See below for more details about each of these challenges. This information was also sent home with your child the last week of school, but I am fully aware that this may have not made it home with them!
Happy Learning!

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE & INFORMATION!
Summer Reading Challenge!
With the Find-a-Book website, your child can find books that will help them continue learning – and further nurture a love of reading. This site uses a student’s Lexile reading measure to determine appropriate reading books for your child. Please note: Due to not taking an end of year reading assessment, you will most likely not have a Lexile measure for your child.
- Enter the student’s Lexile measure. If you don’t know a student’s Lexile measure, you can search for books based on their comfort with grade-level materials.
- Select the student’s interest categories.
- View and refine the search results. As you browse books, click the “Find This Book” button next to the book title to check for availability at the local public library.
- Add books to the student’s reading list. You can print the custom list for reference.
Here is another resource, including a free assessment, to determine your child's reading level.
Students entering Grades K-2: Record the book titles that you read this summer and turn the list in to your new teacher when the school year resumes. (A blank reading log can be found at the bottom of this newsletter.)
Students entering Grades 3-5: Complete a book report on two of the books within your reading level. (A blank book report form can be found at the bottom of this newsletter.)
Students can turn in their completed reading list and/or their book reports to their homeroom teacher when we return to school to receive a certificate for a non-uniform day!

Keep reading and earn prizes all summer with the St. Paul Public Library!
This newsletter describes the SPPL Summer Reading Program to earn prizes and join events. You can track your reading hours online or pick up a reading and activity log at any neighborhood location (even if you do not live within the St. Paul city limits).
In case you forgot, Nova students can check out materials in the library or online at sppl.org using your LibraryGo card number that is built as follows:
- Nova's number (2209190300) + (your child's 4-digit lunch PIN number)
- Password: Your child's birthday written MMDDYY, for example, January 26, 2012 would be 01262012
Contact Ms. Gabor if you need your student's Lunch PIN or any other assistance with accessing your child's LibraryGo card.
SUMMER MATH CHALLENGE INFORMATION!
Summer Math Challenge!
Keep math skills sharp with math practice over the summer!
One option for math practice is Tang Math. This site has a gameboard with activities to complete and a certificate to print at the end! https://tangmath.com/summer
Another option for daily activities and math lessons (especially if your child has just completed Kindergarten or is starting Kindergarten) is Khan Academy. You can create an account for your child and work through grade-specific or concept-specific lessons and track progress along the way.
Students have access to math practice through their Nova IXL accounts. Students can practice various concepts and receive progress updates as well as completion certificates to submit to their teacher in the fall. Information about how to access IXL can be found below.
Lastly, another great resource with many options for practice is https://www.mathmammoth.com/lessons/summer_math
Students can turn in their award certificate, unit quizzes, or some sort of proof of their math progress to their homeroom teacher when we return to school to receive a certificate for a non-uniform day! We will not be picky, just show us that your child has been engaging with math over the summer! :)
How to Access IXL Online:
Go to: https://www.ixl.com/signin/novaclassical
*Must use this website as it is school-specific
Student username is first name initial with the last 2 digits of their graduation year.
For example, 4th grader John Smith’s username would be jsmith32
Password: abc123
2023-2024 Graduation Grades:
5th Grade: 31
4th Grade: 32
3rd Grade: 33
2nd Grade: 34
1st Grade: 35
Kindergarten: 36
