Milo School News
September
Principal's Point
This school year brings many exciting changes to our community. We’re thrilled to welcome two new teachers to our staff, each bringing valuable experience to our team. Mrs. Newbury will be primarily in the 1-3 classroom and Miss Oliver is our new Junior High homeroom teacher. She will be teaching 4-9 Math, 4-9 PE and Health, and Science 9. In addition, there has been a shift in leadership, as I have now stepped away to begin my maternity leave. While it’s bittersweet to step back for a while, I do so with full confidence in the team we have in place.
One of our top priorities this year is improving communication between school and home. Based on your helpful feedback, we’ve created a more consistent and streamlined plan to keep you informed. Please keep an eye on your inbox each week for the Milo Memo for an easy-to-read email with important updates, a weekly snapshot, and upcoming events.
Goodbye for now from Mrs. Sara Woofenden as I prepare for this new chapter. I’m excited to officially hand off the “Principal’s Point” to our new principal, Bernie Kirk, who is eager to connect with all of you in this new role.
We’ve had a wonderful start to September, filled with exciting changes and opportunities for learning. This year, I’m teaching science to grades 1–8, and our lab has had a fresh update to match the energy of our students. One highlight is our very own “mini McGregor Lake,” which allows us to study a local ecosystem right here at school. Students will also be investigating how human actions can impact our mini ecosystem.
Beyond the science lab, our school has been buzzing with activity. The Cross-Country Run, Alberta’s Literacy and Numeracy Assessment for grades 1–3, and the Terry Fox Run have already kept us busy. We’ve also launched our first round of options, giving students new opportunities to explore their interests and talents.
I feel very fortunate to work alongside the dedicated staff at Milo Community School, and I’m grateful to be part of such a supportive and enthusiastic team.
Welcome Ms. Oliver
Ms. Oliver will be the Jr. High Homeroom teacher and will be teaching Jr. High Math, Phys. Ed. Health and Grade 9 science as well as 4/5/6 math and Phys. Ed and option classes for grades 4--9.

Terry Fox Run
It was a beautiful, breezy day for the Terry Fox Run and we are so proud of all of our students for finishing it, even the little kindergartners made it all the way. Thank you to our sponsors for a delicious hamburger lunch with ice cream for dessert: The Elevator Marketing Solutions, Milo Lions Club, Milo & District Agricultural Society, Milo Green Foods and Godkin Farms Ltd.
At the time of printing we did not have a total for the amount of donations collected in our community.
September Assembly
This year we will be holding monthly assemblies on the last Thursday of each month. Our student council will make announcements of upcoming spirit days and activities. We will be acknowledging and celebrating student achievements as well. This month all students that have had perfect attendance for the month of September were entered into a draw for 2 tickets for an upcoming Flames exhibition game donated by Lloyd Deitz. The winner was Ila Heinz. Sadly, we also said good bye to Mrs. Hall as she retires after 5 years as a fabulous EA and friend to many. Thankfully she will be visiting us often as a sub when needed. Thank you for all that you do, you will be so missed.
