ABC's of Alice lessons with students
Dear Families,
We want to share a quick update on how Carver Elementary practices safety using the ABCs of the ALICE intruder response framework.
On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, CES trained administrators and counselors will present age-appropriate lessons in classrooms to help students understand school safety steps.
Grades K–3: We will read and discuss the book I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared, tailored for our school.
Grades 4–5: Students will discuss key concepts from the book and review Carver Elementary safety procedures. The students will have an opportunity to ask questions.
Specialized Classes: Support staff and therapists will share custom social stories designed for our preschool and specialized programs.
What are the ABCs of ALICE?
Alert: Sharing clear information about what is happening and where.
Barricade and Lockdown: Securing classrooms and providing examples of what a barricade in their classroom could look like.
Communicate/Inform: Keeping everyone updated to make good decisions.
Distract: Creating distance or confusion if necessary.
Evacuate/Escape: Safely exiting the building when it is the best option. Teachers will walk students to our designated evacuation area nearby in the next few days.
We empower staff and students with options to keep themselves safe in an emergency. We will not ask anyone to confront an intruder.
How you can help: Please remind your child that listening carefully to their teacher's instructions is the most helpful thing they can do during a drill or safety lesson.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at 508-866-6210.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Ruby C. Maestas

MATH MATTERS
By: Jennifer Kelley, CES Math Instructional Coach
Welcome to a Brand-New School Year of Math!
As we kick off a new school year, we want to share something important: in our CES math classrooms, our main goal isn’t just getting the right answer—it’s about building confidence, curiosity, and a strong growth mindset!
Math is a skill that grows with practice, just like playing a sport or learning an instrument. When students realize that mistakes are simply proof that their brain is growing, math becomes an exciting adventure rather than something to fear. Too often, we hear students say, "I’m just not a math person!" This is the year we change that story together—and that journey starts at home!
You don’t need to be a math whiz to support your child. Here are three simple ways to help:
Reframe mistakes as natural learning opportunities.
Focus on the process, not how fast they solve it.
Spot math everywhere in your daily routines.
Let's make this school year full of discovery, teamwork, and creative thinking!
Try these Family Math Challenges at Home! You could solve them together over dinner, before bed, or in the car!
