Hello NRMS Families,

We are sharing a Monday update this week, as we have been away from school since February 13. What a week we just experienced. We hope that everyone was able to survive the Blizzard of '26 without too much damage to your homes or property. Extended power outages create so many hardships for families. We hope you were able to find heat, food, and the necessities you needed to navigate the days it took to restore power. It is so nice to have students and staff back at school, as we try to settle back into routines while taking the time to let everyone share their storm-related stories.

Happy March! While it is coming in like a lion with bitter cold temperatures today, we are hopeful that milder weather, the melting of snow, and the emergence of spring flowers is just around the corner. In fact, this upcoming weekend we change the clocks ahead one hour for the start of daylight savings time. The extra sunlight helps us all be in a better mood after what has been a LONG winter on the Cape.

We are postponing the Spaghetti Dinner and Talent Show fundraiser until March 18. We will still need volunteers to assist and we do hope that all of our families will attend.

Spring sports begin soon; another sure sign of brighter days ahead. See below for sports registration information.

Now that we have had a total of six snow days during this school year, we await word from DESE if we will have to make up all of these days. If we are required to do so, that could push the last day of school back to June 29. This week we should receive more clarity on what we will project as the last day of school based on guidance from the Department of Education. In the meantime, we have done our best to map out the spring events. Starting in today's newsletter, each week we will provide the full list of events scheduled for March, April, May, and June so that families can save the dates and plan accordingly. Please do your best to schedule summer plans based on the school calendar and required school days so that students do not miss the end of year events. The full list of events and current thinking on dates is below.

A reminder that Friday is an early release day for students.

Have a great week!

Peter Cohen, Ed.D.

Principal

Spring Athletics Information

Dear Nauset Regional Middle School Parents & Student-Athletes,

NRMS is gearing up for the upcoming 2026 Spring Sports Season here at NRMS. This Spring, we will be offering Track & Field, Softball, and Baseball for students in grades 6 through 8.

REGISTRATION
Registration for the spring sports season will begin on Monday, March 2nd and end on Friday, March 20th.

To sign up for participation, please visit Arbiter Sports by clicking: HERE.

Please ensure that you complete the registration by the deadline, which is March 20th.

PHYSICAL
Before students can participate in tryouts, it is imperative that they have a valid in-person physical examination on file with the nurse's office at NRMS dated within the last 13 months. If your student-athlete's physical examination is not up to date, we urge you to schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience to ensure timely clearance for participation in the tryouts. For questions regarding physicals, contact our school nurse Bonnie Hartung (hartungb@nausetschools.org)

CONCUSSION EDUCATION
Students must complete the online concussion education course for students. Select Massachusetts and download the course. The course is free.

Email a screenshot/picture of the completion certificate to the NRMS Athletic Director Greggory Barr at barrg@nausetschools.org . The certificate will have a completion code on the bottom right of the certificate. The course certificate is valid for one year.

ELIGIBILITY
Academic eligibility for participation in Spring sports is determined by their report cards. Students with two or more failing grades, or those with one failing grade and an incomplete, will be deemed academically ineligible for participation. Additionally, students intending to try out for teams will undergo an eligibility review to assess their adherence to the Nauset ROCKS principles. Students who have failed to demonstrate these principles may be denied the opportunity to participate.

SPRING SPORTS MANDATORY MEETING
The Spring sports Student Athlete meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 19th @ 2:45pm in the Nauset Regional Middle School cafeteria. There will be a Virtual Parent meeting on March 19th at 6:30pm. meet.google.com/gfn-abvd-jss

TRYOUTS/PRACTICE START DATES
The first day of Spring sports is scheduled for Monday, March 23rd.

We look forward to another exciting season of teamwork, skill development, and sportsmanship. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our athletic programs.

Sincerely,

Greggory Barr
NRMS Athletic Director

Please Help Us Out With the Spaghetti Dinner

Dear NRMS Parents,

We are excited to share that our 8th Grade Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser will take place on Thursday, March 18, 2026, from 5:00–7:00 PM. This event will help support our students as they prepare for their New York City school trip.

Tickets are $15, and children under 5 eat free. 8th grade students are now selling tickets. A portion of each ticket sold will go directly toward reducing individual student trip costs, while another portion will support the NYC Trip Scholarship Fund to ensure all students have the opportunity to participate. Tickets will also be available at the door.

To make this event a success, we are asking for your support through both donations and volunteer assistance. We are currently seeking donations of:

  • Pasta

  • Pasta sauce

  • Rolls and garlic bread

  • Water and soda

  • Desserts

We are also looking for volunteers to help with setup, cooking, serving, and cleanup on the day of the event. Any time you can offer is greatly appreciated.

In addition to the dinner, we are thrilled to host our first-ever “Nauset’s Got Talent” talent show that same evening from 6:00–8:00 PM, featuring performances by both students and staff. Tickets for the talent show will be $5, and all proceeds will benefit the Field Trip Scholarship Fund.

Finally, we encourage you to look ahead to June and consider volunteering for the 8th Grade Dinner Dance. Traditionally, 7th grade parents “pay it forward” by chaperoning the dance so that when their child reaches 8th grade, they can fully enjoy this special milestone. The date for the dance will be announced in the coming weeks.

Thank you in advance for your continued support of our students and school community. If you are able to donate items or volunteer, please reach out - ptonrms@gmail.com - we truly appreciate your partnership in making these events memorable and successful.

DESE Integrated Monitoring Review Information

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Public School Monitoring (PSM) will conduct an Integrated Monitoring Review of Nauset Public Schools during the week of April 6, 2026. Each school district, charter school, vocational school, and virtual school undergoes an Integrated Monitoring Review every three years. The areas addressed during an Integrated Monitoring Review are organized into two groups, known as Group A Universal Standards and Group B Universal Standards.

Nauset Public Schools will be undergoing a Group B monitoring review that addresses special education teacher and related service personnel licensure; special education professional development; parent, student, and community engagement, including compliance with Child Find requirements; facilities and classroom observations; implementation and oversight of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs); time and learning; and equal access.

The process includes interviews with district staff and administrators, review of policies and procedures, and school building visits. The process may also include parent/caregiver, student, and teacher focus group meetings to gather additional information. Interpretation will be provided, if needed.

For more information about the review process, please visit the Parent Resources page at https://www.doe.mass.edu/psm/parents.

The Department will also send a parent survey, in multiple languages and formats, as needed, to parents/guardians of special education students to gather key information on the special education processes and procedures.

Parents/guardians and other interested persons may call Julie Evans, Monitoring Review Chairperson, at (781) 338-3754 to request a telephone interview. If anyone requires an accommodation, such as translation, to participate in an interview, the Department will make the necessary arrangements.

Within approximately 60 business days after the onsite visit, the review chairperson will provide the district with a report that includes information on further actions that may be required. The public can access the report at https://www.doe.mass.edu/psm/tfm/default.html.
