Science
This spring, students in AP Biology, Honors Biology, and Environmental Science took their learning to new heights with a science-focused field trip to Mt. Cardigan. Led by science teachers Melissa Stark, Kiri Staiger, and Jenn Fitzgerald, students spent the day immersed in nature, science, and reflection—combining rigorous fieldwork with a rewarding outdoor experience.
Honors Biology and AP Biology students worked collaboratively on an ecological study, using the point center quarter sampling method at five different elevations along the trail. They gathered data on tree density, species composition, and plant communities, putting classroom concepts into action as they analyzed how biodiversity changes with elevation. After completing their fieldwork, the students continued their ascent to the summit, where they enjoyed lunch and sweeping views.
Environmental Science students, who have spent the year studying local ecosystems and environmental issues, used the hike as a culminating experience. With recent lessons in outdoor and hiking safety fresh in mind, students made the trek to the summit and spent time identifying the peaks of nearby New Hampshire mountains—an activity made possible by the day’s crystal-clear visibility. Once at the top, students also completed written reflections on their year of learning and their final projects.
The Mt. Cardigan hike offered students not only a chance to apply science skills in the field, but also a meaningful moment to connect with nature and one another. With miles of visibility—including views of a still snow-capped Mt. Washington—and memories made along the trail, it was a day of learning, discovery, and awe that won’t soon be forgotten.
Math
AP Calculus created games to wrap up the school year. The students enjoyed playing Rates Relay, Calculand and a Calculus version of Monopoly to wrap up their learning.
AP Precalculus has started to learn Calculus and is discovering what continuity means graphically before connecting algebraic topics to limits.
AP Senior Director Visit
AP Calculus and AP Precalculus both had a visit from College Board's senior director for AP Precalculus, Judith Vigue, to discuss how the class is going and how it helped them with AP Calculus this year. Judith picked Mascoma to visit as we had 100% of our AP Precalc students take the exam last year and nearly all students passed the exam in the first year of offering the course. Mrs. Cole-Henry also attended the AP reading for AP Precalculus last year and learned not only how the exams are graded but was also able to impart crucial information to both AP Calculus and AP Precalculus before this year's exam.

Writer Guild Entry
Truly Right By: Cheyenne G.
I still listen to Wilbur everytime I get hopeless,
The whole red and black album,
The one you showed me one day in cloudy April.
The one you loved almost as much as you had loved our friendship.
I listen to it and wonder if you still listen to his music too,
Even if everyone hates him now.
Fixing isn’t possible in the mess we’ve created,
I could push the blame onto you if I really wanted to,
I won’t.
But I can’t blame myself either.
You ignore me like I was in the wrong,
Something that I find similar to other friends I’ve lost.
Like I was the one who dropped the match onto the bridge between us.
I didn’t want to burn a bridge,
I never did,
I was just immature and you didn’t understand,
Partly because I never explained it,
Partly because you were caught up in other things.
I still stand and clap at the end of your performances,
I still congratulate you,
To let you know that I still care.
And that I never stopped caring.
I wanted space and got a world apart,
You wanted answers, and I gave you the ones you didn’t want to hear.
Seven songs,
One album,
My favorite is number 3.
I listen to it on stormy days when the sun refuses to bless me with its light.
I wonder if I should reach out,
Try to mend what's been broken,
But people say if you wanted to you’d try too,
They say you can’t mend something that people don’t want fixed.
So I’ll stay in my lane,
Listening to the album you showed me one cloudy afternoon in April,
Wondering who’s in the wrong,
And what is truly right.
