Happy December, Huckleberry Heroes!

I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break! There are only a few weeks left until we have our long Winter break, but before then, we have a lot of exciting things happening here at HHS!

Check out the activities and resources in this month's newsletter!

This month we are continuing our Huckleberry Hero theme of "Celebrating Who WE Are!" Students will continue to listen to books, engage in discussions, and participate in activities that celebrate differences and what unites us as a school family. There will also be an at-home connection activity that your child will be bringing home soon, where they will be decorating a puzzle piece with what makes them "one of a kind". We would love for all of our Huckleberry Heroes to complete this activity and bring it back to school! Your child will watch my video in class to learn more about the at-home activity and see an example, but of course, each puzzle piece is unique to your child. We hope you can spend some time talking with your child about what makes them unique and special (i.e. traditions in your family, languages spoken in your home, strengths, or talents). Your child can decorate the puzzle piece to describe themselves using words or pictures that they draw, cut out of a magazine, or print. I can't wait to learn all about what makes our Huckleberry Heroes special and unique as well as what brings us all together as one school family.

Lee & Low Storytime: Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match, read by Monica Brown | Picture Book Read Aloud
In this story, Marisol tries to 'match' because that is what everyone wants her to do. Marisol realizes that she doesn't need to 'match' because she is unique and special! After listening to the read aloud, spend some time thinking about what makes you "one of a kind"!

How to Handle Tantrums and Meltdowns - Child Mind Institute

The first thing we have to do to manage tantrums is to understand them. That is not always as easy as it sounds, since tantrums and meltdowns are generated by a lot of different things: fear, frustration, anger, sensory overload, to name a few.

How to Set Limits on Screen Time - Child Mind Institute

Setting rules around screen time is never easy, but since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, it may feel impossible. Lots of kids are used to extra screen time at this point - is it time to cut back again? How do you know how much is too much?
