Cole Miners' Dig

Principal's Notes
I'm pleased to share with you that even with all the viruses going around the area, 97% of our students have been present in school 90% or more of the school days thus far! That's great news! As always, please continue to keep children home if they are ill following the guidelines in the Parent Student Handbook, but if they are well enough to be in school, we love having them here.
Magnificent Meerkats
These Magnificent Meerkats were nominated this week for some pretty amazing reasons including being kind and inclusive to all peers, showing persistence with challenging concepts, and working hard to stay focused in class. Way to go, Magnificent Meerkats!

Student Government
Student Government met this week to continue the project they began at our last meeting. Representatives worked together to create posters inspired by the ideas and suggestions shared by their classmates. These posters are now displayed throughout the hallways to boost student morale and provide friendly reminders of our school expectations, with messages like “When there is rain, be a rainbow,” “Be a buddy, not a bully,” and “Walk, don’t talk.” We’re so proud of our student leaders for helping spread positivity across Cole School!
School Counseling Corner
Hi Cole Families! This week, students continued to work on Fastbridge screeners in ELA, math, and social emotional learning. Classes have also been finishing up Unit 2 of Second Step which focuses on Emotion Management. You can practice these skills with them at home, too!
In Kindergarten and 1st grade, students are learning how to use clues and examining a person’s face and body to understand what’s going on. At home, you can notice and celebrate your child when they’re able to recognize and label feelings.
2nd graders are learning to describe more complex emotions (ex: proud, disappointed) and learning how to calm themselves down. You can reinforce this by noticing and praising your child when they help themselves feel calm without an adult.
3rd graders are learning that emotions are important because they give us information about our lives (ex: fear helps us realize we might be in danger). They are also learning to label different levels of emotions and the importance of taking a break. At home, you can celebrate when your child chooses to take a break on their own.
4th graders are learning about the importance of managing strong emotions and practicing rethinking situations so they feel more calm and are able to think more clearly. You can reinforce this at home by celebrating when your child is able to think about a challenging situation in a new way.
5th graders are learning to anticipate recurring situations that cause them to feel strong emotions. You can celebrate your child when they’re able to handle a situation more easily than they have in the past.
Specialists' Scoop
We started our Gymnastics Unit! While working on flexibility, balance and strength, students practiced rolls, weight on hands and jumps. Students also had an opportunity to use one of three climbing ropes, two of the balance beans and one parallel bar.

"Roses as Red, Violets are Blue, How Sweet it is to be Taught by You!"
Let's fill our teacher’s vases this Valentine's Day! For only $5 you can purchase a beautiful rose (or roses!) for a teacher or staff member of your choosing. NEF will hand deliver the flowers to the lucky recipient Valentine's Day week.
With the purchase of one or more flowers you are not only showing your favorite Norwell educator how much they are appreciated, but you are also supporting the NEF, which provides funding for innovative educational programs, activities and materials for all Norwell Public Schools.
This is also a great opportunity to not only celebrate our deserving classroom teachers, but to recognize the unsung heroes of our elementary schools - nurses, technology teachers, aides, administrators, office staff, special education teachers, etc.
So let's fill our teacher’s vases this Valentine's Day! Click here to get started
