MOY Assessments continue
Focus on STUDENT LEARNING
Last week, I participated in the NC Instructional Leadership Academy (NC-ILA), which is a two-year program to help improve student outcomes in North Carolina public schools. This session's focus was on Student Learning and in particular on monitoring, tracking, and analyzing student work samples. As I reflected on observing student work examples last week in classes, multiple challenges became evident, but I would like to highlight three challenges where families can help significantly:
- Students need to focus more on focusing during lessons AND completing expected classroom work. Teachers and instructional staff (particularly in grades 3-5) constantly have to push students to stay ON TASK and COMPLETE work. Families: check your child's work frequently throughout the week.
- Students MUST improve handwriting so that teachers, instructional staff, and administrators can evaluate student work. Families: monitor your child's homework completion to ensure that it is complete and readable.
- Students must practice reading a lot more so that they become comfortable reading different types of materials and subjects. Students may be good in math, but if they struggle to read instructions or word problems, they will struggle to be successful. Families: have your child read the instructions, assignment questions, signs when you are out and about, labels in stores, and cooking recipes.
A lot is going on this week at EO Young including NC Check-Ins (Gr3-5), ACCESS (multi-language learners), and our February 14th Friendship Dance during electives. Keep checking back to the Smore Tiger Den Newsletter for updates https://bit.ly/EOY-TigerDenNews

Community Read Aloud at Perry Memorial Library
New program on Mondays from 5:30pm-6:15pm, starting January 22nd. It is called "Community Read Aloud" and the idea is that youth will have a chance to read to a volunteer with the National Honor Society Students from the Vance County Early College High School. There is no registration required but folks can let me know they are coming by emailing mpeters@perrylibrary.org. We are hoping to foster the love of reading and support an encouraging environment for learning and reading out loud as everyone gets a chance to listen to themselves and others read.
