Sand Ridge Elementary School
Striving for Excellence Everyday

Weekly Update 10.18
Hello Sharks!
It was a fabulous week at Sand Ridge Elementary!
The next two weeks will include a School Improvement Team Meeting and plan presentation on Wednesday 10/21. Friday 10/23 is Sand Ridge night at the Swansboro High School football game. The SBHS football team and band will be on campus Friday morning welcoming students and all students will come home with a free ticket to Friday nights game. Red Ribbon week starts Monday, 10/26 and Tuesday 10/27 is the end of the first 9 weeks!
Attention Active Duty and Retired service members. Sand Ridge will host a Veterans Day appreciation luncheon on Tuesday, November 10th. Permission forms were sent home with students. Please RSVP by Monday November 2nd.
If you use School Dismissal Manager to send absence notes in, please keep in mind that we need a copy of the doctors notes to code the absence as a Medical Appointment. Parent notes are coded as Parent Notes/Illnesses. Students are permitted to have 10 Parent Notes per school year. Doctors notes can be uploaded to SDM, emailed to patty.cole@onslow.k12.nc.us or sent in to school.
This month, staff will focus on Responsibility as the Character Trait of the Month. We need your help! Check out the school-wide Responsibility letter below and click on your student’s grade-level Responsibility Newsletter to see how you can support these lessons at home.
I can't wait to see everyone on Monday!
Communication is Critical!
1. The teacher is always the first point of contact. If you cannot resolve an issue after meeting with the teacher, please schedule an appointment to meet with administration.
2. See our data manager (Patty Cole) to sign up for Infinite Campus. This gives you up to date info on student attendance and assignments.
3. Pay attention to the weekly ALL CALL and EMAIL that is sent out every Sunday evening. If you are not receiving the call and email, please let Patty Cole (patty.cole@onslow.k12.nc.us) know so that we can make sure your info. is up to date. This is the method that we will use to communicate with parents in the event of an emergency, so you need to make sure that you are receiving these calls.
4. Check out our school website: https://sres.onslow.k12.nc.us/
5. Check out our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Sand.Ridge.Elementary
6. If there are custody issues, we must have a copy of the current custody paperwork on file with a judge's signature. If not, both parents have equal access to the student and their educational records.
7. If you have concerns regarding bus routes, stops, schedules and drivers, please direct those concerns to our transportation coordinator Allison Massey at 326-1436. SRES does not have direct communication with the buses; therefore, this must ghttps://www.onslow.k12.nc.us/departments/operations-facilities/operations-departments/school-transportatioo through the transportation dept. Please remember if you would like to stay up to date with bus changes and delays, please download the Edulog Parent Portal App. More info can be found here: https://www.onslow.k12.nc.us/departments/operations-facilities/operations-departments/school-transportation/edulog-parent-portal
Cell Phones
The widespread use of smartphones helps users stay connected, but also raises privacy concerns. According to a 2018 study by the Pew Research Center, 95% of teens have access to a smartphone, and 45% say they are online “almost constantly."
Help keep your children safe by asking the following questions regularly.
- What do you use your phone for the most? Can you show me some of your favorite apps?
- Do you know everyone you have as a contact in your phone and on different apps?
- Has anyone ever taken an embarrassing picture of you without your permission?
- Have you ever taken an embarrassing picture of someone else? What did you do with it?
- Have you ever talked with someone you first met online on your cellphone?
- What would you do if someone sent you a text or picture that was inappropriate?
- Do you know how to turn off GPS and turn on privacy settings for the different apps you use?
Reinforce
- Expectations and guidance for when children are allowed to use their cellphones, what websites they can visit, and what apps they can download.
- The important of privacy. Know an app’s purpose before your child downloads it. Who are the users? What type of privacy settings are available?
- The idea that anything a user sends from their phones can be easily forwarded and shared.
- The possible consequences of sending sexually explicit or provocative images or text messages with their phones.
