Archimedas Lab
Purpose
To use Archimedes principle to determine the mass needed to place a block of wood in neutral buoyancy just below the surface of a bucket of water.
Materials
Steps
1. Record the dimensions of your block.
- L1 = _________
- L2 = _________
- L3 = _________
2. Draw an “elaborate” sketch of your block resting in the bucket of water BEFORE a mass is hung from the bottom of the block.
3. Record the mass of your block. _____________________ grams
Calculate the density of the block of wood. Show all of your work.
Density = _______________ kg/m3
4. Calculate the height the block that will be above and below the water without any mass added to block.
- Above = ____________m
- Below = ____________ m
5. Draw an “elaborate” sketch of your block resting in the bucket of water AFTER a mass is hung from the bottom of the block causing the block to submerge just below the surface in neutral buoyancy.
6. Calculate the amount of mass it takes to just cause your block of wood to be completely submerged. Show all of your work.
Calculated Mass = _____________ kg = ________________ grams
7. Take the block and your notes to the teacher for testing.
8. Did it work? Explain any sources of error.
