Student Engagement As We Approach Winter

It's that time of year when students go from day dreaming about Halloween costumes to holiday gifts as teachers and admin work over time to keep students engaged and motivated. The struggle is real. Whether your students are nearing the end of their courses or your school open enrolls new students weekly, incorporating successful methods of engagement doesn't have to be rocket science...

Tip 1: Get Kids Comfortable with Canvas: Take them on a guided tour of Canvas, pointing out the different features and functionality. Consider creating your own personalized tutorial to show students and learning coaches how to find materials, assignments, and assessments, and how to communicate with their instructor and fellow students. For readymade general videos, you can access success.strongmind.com and share any videos via their Vimeo links.

Tip 2: Research has concluded that when an online course included a community component, students were five times more engaged and 16 times more likely to see the course to the end. Engagement increases when students feel like they ‘belong’ and are ‘part of something’ with like-minded people. You can create community building events using the Canvas calendar feature and embed links to Big Blue Button or another video conferencing app. You can also easily create your own discussions or announcements with replying and liking enabled to promote cooperative discourse and community.

Tip 3: Leave them wanting more… Who doesn’t love a cliffhanger or the previews before a movie? At the end of a week’s content, create a new lesson that serves as an anticipatory set... an image, a collage, or a video clip to get students wondering and excited about what they will be doing next. You can embed videos in the rich content editor by selecting the kebab (⋮) and the cloud icon. There you can paste your embed code. See below to view the steps.

Feature Spotlight: Text-To-Speech with ReadSpeaker

StrongMind content is designed with the needs of the end user at all times, and interactive and audio is a compelling part of this landscape. StrongMind employs ReadSpeaker as an audio solution to empower your learners. Providing an audio version of learning content is proven to increase results for users, and can help you attract and retain a larger and more diverse student population.

Much of our content is enabled with an easy to identify yellow audio icon. With the click of a button, text can be read aloud and highlighted at the same time. Students and learning coaches can also highlight and right-click text to activate read aloud, but will find two additional tools as well: dictionary and translate. Language learners can select their text and then choose from 22 different languages to translate from English. This text can be read in the translated language or read aloud. ReadSpeaker text can also be enlarged to assist users with visual impairments.

Text-to-speech makes content convenient and engaging, improves learning results, and addresses accessibility, learning disabilities, and language barriers so you can meet your students where they are.
