A message from Our Principal A message from Our Principal

Dear Loess Hills Families,

Spring has arrived, and with it comes many important events and updates for our school community. Thank you for your ongoing partnership in helping our students learn and grow. Please take a moment to review the information below.

ISASP State Testing (Grades 3-5)

April 13-May 1

Students in grades 3-5 will participate in the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP). This is a very important assessment, and we encourage all students to do their best.

To help your child be successful, please ensure they:

  • Get a good night sleep
  • Eat a healthy breakfast
  • Arrive at school on time each day
Your support at home plays a crucial role in your child's success.

Please avoid scheduling vacations or doctor appointments during the testing window.

Thank You for Attending Confereneces

We appreciate every family who attended spring conferences. Meeting together allows us to celebrate student success and collaborate on next steps to support learning. Report cards will be sent home on April 1st.

Kindergarten Registration – May 4 & 5

Kindergarten Registration for the 2026/2027 school year is coming up on May 4th and May 5th.

If you have not registered your incoming kindergartener, please call the office to schedule a time for your child to visit classrooms and meet the teachers on May 4th or 5th.

Please note: There is no school for our current kindergarteners on these days.

Class List Planning for 2026/2027

We will soon begin creating class lists for next year. If you have a specific reason for requesting a certain classroom placement for your child, a parent input form is available in the office.

  • Forms are due by May 1st for consideration.
  • Submitting a form does not guarantee placement in a specific classroom, but all requests are reviewed carefully.

Spring Music Programs (Kindergarten & 1st Grade)

April 14

  • Kindergarten: 9:15 AM
  • 1st Grade: 10:00 AM
Please note that students in grades 3-5 cannot attend these performances, as they will be participating in ISASP testing during this time.

Spring Break-No School

There will be no schools on April 2, 3, and 6 for Spring Break.

We hope all families enjoy a safe and restful weekend.

Fire Lane Safety Reminder

To keep our parking lot safe and traffic flowing smoothly:

  • Please do not leave your car unattended in the fire lane during drop-off or pick-up.
  • This lane is reserved for quick drop-offs and pick-ups only.
Thank you for helping us maintain a safe environment for all students.

Respectfully,

Tami Voegeli

Counselor's Corner

During the month of April, our Character Strong focus is on Courage. One way to think about Courage is "choosing what is helpful, right, and kind even when it is hard or scary." Courage can look a little different for everyone. Get ready to explore as a family what Courage means to you!

Character Strong has Family CharacterDare activities that offer families the opportunity to engage in challenges designed to increase connection and conversation at home. These also help provide students with more opportunities to practice habits discussed in class.

Here is your Family CharacterDare this month:

Can you share or show what it means to have Courage?

When you practice Courage, how do you feel? Why?

#1 Reflect, think and discuss things you would like to do, but find intimidating or scary (individually or as a family). Maybe it’s a new hobby, trying a new game, sharing your art or invention with others, or going on an adventure somewhere. Give 1 of these things a try together this month and take a selfie to capture your memory.

#2 We have all demonstrated Courage in our lives. Stories are powerful tools for connecting as a family. Protect time this week to share stories about Courage with each other (you can use the story prompts to get started). At the end of the conversation, think of 1 way you can practice Courage this week.

Story Prompts:

· A time I (or someone else) showed Courage was _______.

· An act of Courage that changed/challenged me was _____.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if I can be of help. My email is: wanderw@live.siouxcityschools.com, or you can message me on TalkingPoints.

Thank you for everything you do for your children!

Important Reminders for School Meals

Loess Hills is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program which allows our school to serve breakfast and lunch at no cost to our students. Loess Hills students will not be charged for breakfast or lunch during the upcoming school year.

A complete list of CEP schools in our district can be found on our website. If you have a student attending another school that is not a CEP school, we encourage you to complete the 2025-2026 online application for free and reduced meals. This will help ensure other students in your family receive the meals they need during the upcoming school year.

For questions or assistance with school meals, please contact the District’s Food Service Department at 712-279-6860 or 712-279-6862.

The District is committed to providing all students with a safe learning environment in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect. The District’s Anti-Bullying, Harassment, and Hazing policy defines bullying and harassment as well as the procedures for reporting and investigating bullying or harassment complaints.

If your student feels they are being bullied or harassed, encourage your student to visit with the student involved and tell them to stop. They should also tell a teacher, principal, or trusted adult at their school. An online discrimination, bullying, harassment, and hazing complaint form is also available on the District’s website and may be completed by the student, parent, or school employee.
