Reading Reading

Module 1 & 2

Students will be finishing up Module 1 and working mid-way through Module 2 during the month of September. In Module 1, our stories’ focus was all about being a super citizen, which tied in well to Social Studies. Module 2 moves into how exploring helps us understand the world around us? Some key components we’ll be teaching this month include:

  • Central Idea

  • Monitor and Clarify

  • Author’s Purpose

  • Summarization

  • Characters

  • Create Mental Images

  • Make Inferences

Two highlights: Central Idea & Making Inferences

Central Idea pops up in most of our readings. It is important to work with your child at home to ensure that they understand how to pick out what the story is mainly about, along with some of the most important details that support the central/main idea, when they are reading at home.

Another important skill we will focus on is making inferences. Students will need to utilize their background knowledge, plus the text clues, in order to decipher the most thoughtful answer. This skill can be a little tricky, and requires higher-level thinking.

Writing Writing

Students are learning about the elements of narrative writing while working on their own personal narrative about “A time they helped to make the world a better place”, by helping a friend, family member or/and the community.
