Head Cheetah Message
Families,
While it was a very short week, we still managed to pack in many special events. We recognized Random Acts of Kindness Week, enjoyed an Arctic Celebration in preschool, and heard all about grade three’s field trip to Glastonbury/East Hartford Magnet School’s planetarium! It is truly hard to believe that we’ll be wrapping up the month of February next week! The first week of March will bring parent/teacher conferences and the Scholastic Book Fair! Think spring!!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Joey & Andrea

Random Acts Of Kindness Week
This year, Random Acts Of Kindness Week ran from Saturday, February 14, to Friday, February 20. This annual event encourages intentional, small gestures to boost the well-being of a community. This week, our students were reminded to put kindness first and share it everywhere they go.
Smart Start’s Arctic Celebration
After studying arctic animals for the past several weeks, the Smart Start preschoolers held a celebration this afternoon to teach their caregivers about all that they’ve learned!
PAWSitive Office Referrals
A PAWsitive office referral is submitted when a staff member recognizes a student who is going above and beyond to exemplify one of our three school rules - taking care of others, taking care of self, & taking care of things.
Memorial Models
Memorial Models are chosen weekly by their teacher. These students have excelled all week in taking care of themselves, others and things. The recipients will dine at a VIP table during lunch every Friday!

Read Across America Week is coming up and will be celebrated in schools across the country.
What is Read Across America?
Read Across America was Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA). NEA’s Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. This year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone.
Who Is Celebrating?
Across the nation, teachers, teenagers, librarians, politicians, actors, athletes, parents, grandparents, and others develop Read Across America activities to bring reading excitement to children of all ages. Governors, mayors, and other elected officials recognize the role reading plays in their communities.
To help celebrate at home, you can do the following:
Read together as a family
Visit the local library
Talk at dinner about what everyone is reading
Create a cozy reading space in your home
Let your child read to you
To help celebrate at Memorial, we invite our students to participate in daily theme days beginning on Friday, February 27th.

Hello Memorial Families! Please find your student’s grade level below to see what we were up to in music this month.
Preschool: Students enjoyed singing some songs about snow and snowmen. We also had fun with some open exploration of instruments while music played in the background. Finally, we enjoyed the story “Over in the Meadow”.
Kindergarten: This month, our musical comparison words were high and low. These words are often confused with loud and soft, so we do many activities to reinforce the concept. Students were expected to find high and low sounds in various poems, songs, and stories. Favorites included “Mr. Wiggle and Mr. Waggle”, “Grandma’s Glasses”, “See Saw”, and “Goldilocks”. We had fun imitating the characters’ high and low voices!
First Grade: Students learned about a new music word this month - ostinato (a pattern that repeats). Students also started a unit learning how to play xylophones! Our unit focuses on the song “Who’s in the Woods on this Snowy Day”. We are learning to play three different ostinato parts to go with the song, focusing on playing with a group, using proper technique, and making the parts fit the song. Students will explore the bass xylophone, alto xylophones, soprano xylophones, metallophone, and soprano and alto glockenspiels! They are expected to play with the instructed technique and to show appropriate audience behavior.
Second Grade: This month, students reviewed the concept of ostinato (a pattern that repeats), including watching a silly music video about the word! Then, they were expected to use teamwork to complete a composing project, creating an ostinato to “remix” a music class song. They finished by performing their song and ostinato pattern for the class! Creative performances involved a tool on our chromebooks called “Chrome Music Lab”. The other focus this month was on learning our new note on the music staircase - Do! This low note was found in songs like “Peas Porridge” and “Icka Backa”.
Third Grade: Third graders spent the past month working hard to earn “belts” in recorder karate! Many students are now taking the initiative to learn songs and notes on their own. They have been provided with time to practice and then test when they are ready to try for a new belt! We have also continued to practice identifying notes on the treble clef staff. Students are expected to earn at least their “green belt” by the end of the school year. Starting with level 3, “orange belt”, students will be able to send in videos from home if they would rather do their recorder test that way. For more information, visit the recorder resources page on my music room website.
Please check out the music room website for more information about the music program. Feel free to reach out at any time by emailing smaldonado@easthamptonct.org.
