Happy Monday Kellogg Community.

We are officially into the fourth quarter of the school year. We are gearing up for end of year activities that will take a lot of adult eyes and hands. We would love your help covering some of these important events if you have time. If you are available to volunteer at our dance, our spring picnic, our end of year Oaks Park Trip for 8th graders, our 8th grade promotion, or our Multicultural fair, please reach out to Renee with the PTSA or me via email (dcarpenter@pps.net).

April 15th we will host an evening for our ELD students and parents from 6:00-7:00 pm with some food and important news on programming. We will also have coffee with the principal and our SITE Council meeting on the same day.

April 17th we will host our Spring Dance at Kellogg in the cafe from 5:00-6:30 pm. On April 29th we will host our Spring Picnic from 5:00-7:00 pm here at Kellogg, we will get more information out shortly. Our Multicultural Fair evening is May 27th from 6:00-7:30 pm. We welcome all families to this event. The Multicultural Fair information can be found below. The 8th grade promotion and the annual Oaks Park field trip for our 8th graders will be on June 4th.

Over the last couple weeks we have done some deep dives into our data. Brace yourself for this number, we have had 7,800 tardies this year! That is to say that students have been late to a class almost 8,000 times! The number is staggering! We have students who were late to class 102 times last quarter alone, while we also have students whom are never late. Thus, we have chronic, acute and severe tardy violators.

Our hope is to help our students learn some life lessons about being on time. We have a tardy policy that basically works in five tardies, which is to say that if a student is late five times in one week, the student will get a call home to let their parent/caregiver know and get a lunch reflection. A second violation (10 tardies in one week) will result in the student will get a call home to let their parent/caregiver know and the student gets two days of lunch reflection. A third violation (15 tardies in one week) will result in the student getting a call home to their parent/caregiver and then getting three days of lunch reflection. After three of these sequences we will start suspending the student from things like club, having a face to face parent meeting and potentially putting the student on an attendance contract.

We have to teach our students that being on time and that their attendance matters. Our year to date attendance is steady at about 90%, and our attendance for the prior five day rose to 90%. We have about 66% of our students achieving regular-acceptable attendance and about 23% of our students experiencing chronic absenteeism. Given our improvement goal of 68%, we are well below that value, enough so that I don't think our students are truly understanding the importance of attendance and timeliness.

As shared in previous newsletters, the Oregon Statewide Summative Assessment in ELA and Math are coming soon (Annual Notice). We are organizing our teams of teachers in preparation for these exams. Our tentative week of assessment is May 11-15 for ELA and Math.

Message from the Nurse's Office Message from the Nurse's Office

Hello everyone! As the seasons change, so do pollen counts. I would like to offer some tips for those who may experience allergy symptoms.

  • Drink plenty of water. Doing so helps to thin mucus.

  • Wash face and hands after playing outside to remove pollen.

  • Wash sheets and pillow cases often.

  • Discourage scratching of eyes. Use clean, wet compresses for relief of itching instead.

  • If possible, when temperatures permit, wear a jacket to protect clothes from pollen.

  • Allergens can worsen asthma symptoms so make sure that your child follows their home maintenance program (antihistamines such as Zyrtec or Claritin) and has access to their rescue inhaler.

Kind Regards,

Nurse Jenny Hefele

Multicultural Fair Multicultural Fair

We are excited to announce the launch of what we hope will become an annual Kellogg Community Multicultural Fair, taking place May 27 at 6pm. This event is designed to bring together students, families, community members, and local partners for an evening of cultural celebration and connection.

The Multicultural Fair will be a culminating community event where our school community gathers under one roof to share and celebrate the many cultures represented at Kellogg. The evening will include community partners sharing information about summer and fall opportunities for students and families, cultural affinity groups in our cafeteria sharing food, games, and artifacts; performances on our stage; and displays throughout the building where students and community members can share reflections on “What culture means to me.”

We would love for members of our community to participate in one or more of the following ways:

  • Host a cultural table in the cafeteria, which might include sharing traditional food, games, artifacts, or stories with visitors.
  • Share a performance such as dance, music, storytelling, or a short cultural presentation.
  • Contribute food to our free community banquet featuring small, bite-sized cultural dishes to share.

This event will fill our building with community members who come together to celebrate culture, music, dance, food, and fellowship during this special two-hour gathering.

If you are interested in participating in this community-centered event, please see this link for more information on how to get involved. If you would like to attend, please see the flyer below for more information. We look forward to celebrating and sharing this space with you.

The ROAR Store has moved to its new location with new and improved items and lots of student excitement. The store is now being managed by Student Council. Please encourage your student to ask for ROAR tickets (our currency). Students earn ROAR tickets by upholding our ROAR values here at Kellogg. Our ROAR values are all about getting our students to operate in a respectful way, by being open-minded, by being their authentic self and by being a responsible citizen.

The Store is open Wednesday and Friday during lunch times with new and improved items for students to select from, including big ticket items that are more about an experience than a trinket they can lose. We are excited to get students reactions to the new items available at our new grand opening.

8th grade: Holly Vaughn-Edmonds: hvedmonds@pps.net

6th Grade Update

Ms. Slack is going on medical leave that begins April 13th. She will be out until May 18th. She has a counseling substitute, Jenson Storms, who is working full-time in room 111. You can reach them via email at jestorms@pps.net or call the main office, and they will connect you to the 6th-grade Counselor's phone.

8th Grade News

As we start our final quarter at Kellogg, Ms. Holly is referencing standards for attendance and work completion for high school. Step UP is an amazing mentor based program for students who can benefit from an extra boost, both academically, and socially/emotionally. Students are assigned to a mentor and peer group of about 15 students. Mentors meet with students after school, 1-2 days per week to complete homework, study for tests, etc. We hosted Step Up program managers several weeks ago, and some 8th graders signed up. There is plenty more room! Please reach out to Holly Vaughn-Edmonds at hvedmonds@pps.net for additional information about how to register your child for next fall (offered at McDaniel and Franklin)

Also! Ms. Holly is planning to organize a career event in ELA classes in May with community participation. Parents are an integral part of this activity, where, in small groups, students guess the guest’s job/career through a series of yes/no questions. The time commitment would be for approximately 1-2 hrs of time during the morning, or afternoon. It’s a fun and engaging way to learn about a variety of different jobs! Please reach out if you’re interested.

The safety of our students and staff are our first priority! If a school official is directing traffic, please pay close attention to their instructions. Parents should not enter into the school parking lot from 9:00-9:20 am and from 3:45-4:10. Thank you for your attention to safety on our campus.

The Kellogg School traffic circulation maps outline the planned flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic around our campus during drop-off, pick-up, and other times when school-related traffic is high. The map is designed to help parents, students, school staff, and drivers understand the most efficient and safe routes for entering, exiting, and navigating within the school premises.

Our circulation maps also include nearby Park and Walk locations. These are sites near the school where families can park or students can be dropped off and walk the remainder of the distance to the school site, reducing car traffic in front of the school and allowing you to skip waiting in the drop-off line while students start the day with healthy physical activity, arriving at school more ready to learn. Some Park and Walk locations are at nearby parks, while others encourage families to use on-street parking within the school neighborhood.

Please utilize Park and Walk locations and avoid dropping off and picking up students at the front of the school along 69th Avenue or in the parking lot.

We are grateful that the PPS school community is using the SafeOregon tip line to report incidents that affect students' well-being and ability to learn in a safe environment. Just last year, there were over 300 tips that were submitted anonymously. We are responsible for keeping SafeOregon's contact information for our buildings accurate at all times so that school leaders can be alerted promptly. Please remember to reach out to Andrew Gerlach (agerlach@pps.net) whenever there is a staffing change to building leadership. Please save the SafeOregon number in your phone: 844-472-3367 This will allow you to identify their number when they need to call you if an urgent tip has been submitted in connection to your school.

Schoolwide Expectations Schoolwide Expectations

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

At Kellogg we are proud of our schoolwide expectations as they provide our students with safe, structured, and productive learning environments. Please take the time to review some of our expectations below.

Cell Phones and Technology Devices

Cell phones and all personal technologies (e.g. apple watches, gaming devices, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, etc.) are expected to be off and away during the school day. Students are expected to keep cell phones and technology devices turned off and put away in their lockers. Personal technologies and cell phones should not be on student's person in the hallways, restrooms, and at lunch recess. If a student is spotted with a cell phone or technology device, it will be immediately confiscated and taken to the front office. Students with repeated cell phone or technology violations to this expectation will be placed on individualized cell phone and technology plan.

Bags and Backpacks

In alignment with many other middle schools in the District, all bags and backpacks must be stored in lockers during the school day. Backpacks clutter classroom spaces and items are frequently lost or stolen unless they are stored safely in a locker. Students will use their binders to carry their learning materials throughout the school day.

Learning Logs

To help students stay organized and keep track of important dates and deadlines, students will be issued a Learning Log. Be sure to check your student's Learning Log regularly to stay up-to-date with your student's assignments, tests, and other announcements. Learnings Logs will also serve as the student's hall pass when students leave the classroom during non-transition times. It is critical that students do not lose their Learning Log.

Toys and Valuable Items

Students should leave all toys, valuable items, and any item that can cause safety concerns or distractions at home. Leaving these items at home will ensure items are not lost or stolen.

Closed Campus

Kellogg is a closed campus. All visitors must check-in at the front office. Students must be signed out and picked up by a parent or guardian with ID before 3:45 in order to leave campus before dismissal time. Additionally, our school will not accept DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other deliveries to students. Parents and guardians are welcome to drop off lunch items for their students at any time.

Key Contacts Key Contacts

Below are the counselors and administrators supporting each grade level.

Student safety, student well-being, and student learning is our top priority. If you ever need to speak to a teacher, counselor, administrator, or any staff member, please call the front office or e-mail the individual directly to schedule a meeting. Unannounced meetings are often difficult to accommodate as school staff have busy and tight schedules. In particular, before school, after school, and lunch times are the busiest times in schools as most staff members are on duty to ensure student safety. Thank you for your support and understanding!
