The Tour of Education
To promote the Family and Community University, a group of parents who graduated from this university last year presented testimonials on how this program has positively impacted their lives during a Tour of Educations series held in September at La Promesa, Houston Academy, and Cypresswood Elementary.
Campus Visits
The FACE Team has been invited to participate in school events, Open Houses, and campus staff meetings. We take these opportunities to share with families and district staff how to establish authentic and effective school-home partnerships. We also aim to be closer to the community and get to know what families want to see at schools.

Sharing the Work
FACE has been visiting diverse locations in the district area to inform the community of the programs and resources available to them. From churches to washaterias and taquerias, FACE wants to ensure that our families have the tools to support their students at home.
Partnership with the Mayor's Office for Adult Literacy
FACE attended the Mayor's Literacy Breakfast: A Salute to Adult Literacy event held on September 15 at the Houston Public Library. According to research, 1 in 3 adults in the Houston area performs at the lowest levels of functional literacy. FACE has been collaborating with the Mayor's Office for Adult Literacy (MOAL) to promote adult education among Aldine families.
Reading Club
We are ready to start the first Reading Club of the year! This is an excellent opportunity for families to begin engaging in discussions about the book while learning reading strategies that could help their students. The Spanish Book Club will read Senderos Fronterizos by Francisco Jimenez, whereas the English Book Club will read I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai.
STORYTELLING IS BACK!
What started as a Read Aloud with the idea of instilling the love of reading in the children has become a Multilingual Storytelling event. Every first Tuesday of the month, the FACE team hosts Virtual Storytelling with the collaboration of district staff and community partners who enjoy reading stories in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and sign language.
Our first Storytelling of the year will take place on Tuesday, October 4th at 5:30 p.m. Click here to register.
We are ready for the 2022-2023 Family and Community University, and we cannot wait to see our families back! Last year, about 1,500 parents attended sessions, and 72 families graduated from the University. We want more families to participate and benefit from the sessions this year. The schedule is flexible, and families can decide on the modality that best accommodates them: in-person, virtual, or pre-recorded. Families who earn at least 15 credits (one credit per session) will be eligible to graduate in May 2023. Click here to visit the university's website.
Outreach Thursday
The FACE Team will be at Haverstock Hill Apartments on Thursday, October 6th, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. For the last two years, every first Thursday of the month, we have been visiting different locations in the Aldine district area to be closer to the community and hear about their needs and what things they want to see in the district. Haverstock Hills is within the school attendance of Francis Elementary, Aldine Middle School, and MacArthur High School.
CHAT WITH FACE
Join us in our first fast and furious Twitter conversation to discuss “family engagement”. Every second Saturday of the month starting on October 8th at 8:00 a.m.
• Great topics of discussion in the Q & A format
• No wrong or right answers
• Everybody is welcome

Paraprofessional Academy for Parents
To help families interested in becoming paraprofessionals in the district, the FACE Department has teamed with Aldine's Human Resources Department to have a Paraprofessional Academy as one of the courses offered in the Family and Community University. We are often asked by parents about the responsibilities and needed academic credentials of the district's paraprofessionals. We hope this academy will inform and encourage parents to work in Aldine.
