StuCo Presents SpringFling 2023

On Friday night, CMS students of all grades danced away the evening at the SpringFling Semi-Formal 2023. The dance was once again planned and set up by the amazing students in StuCo and their Faculty Advisors, Ms. Jewell and Mrs. Ryan. Many parents donated snacks and the drinks for the evening so students could stay fortified and hydrated as they danced and celebrated. A huge thank you goes out to the numerous faculty members who volunteered to chaperone. Without all of these students, teachers, and parents, we wouldn't be able to provide these wonderful events--thank you to all!.

Civics/Research Students Travel to Statewide Competition

On Friday, three groups of 8th grade students in our Civics and Research courses traveled to Clark University in Worcester to compete in a statewide showcase of civics projects. Traveling with them was Mrs. Cerruti (Research teacher) and Mrs. Hannon (Civics teacher).

DESE held this event to celebrate the work of 8th–12th grade civics students across the state. At this civics project showcase, our students shared their work with legislators, subject matter experts, educators, and other community members and received recognition for their civic engagement.

Although our students didn't garner any of the showcases' awards, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. We look forward to continuing to support our students in the development of their civics projects so we can attend again next year.

UPCOMING EVENT: During the Wednesday June 7 School Committee meeting, these students and teachers will be featured in the "Spotlight on CMS" portion of the meeting.

CMS Health Clinic May Update

Grade 6 has completed their postural screenings. If you have not heard from me, your child’s screening test was within range.

Grade 8 has started postural screenings this week.

We are out of tissues, which makes for a tough allergy season. Please send your child in with individual tissue packs that they can carry with them if needed. Tissue box donations will graciously be accepted.

Lastly, we really need substitute school nurses. If you hold an active RN license and are interested, please forward your resume to the attention of Kelli Gildea, Nurse Leader @ kgildea@cohassetk12.org. When there is no substitute nurse for middle school, the high school nurse has had to cover all the students at both CMS and CHS and middle school students are asked to go the high school for nursing needs. Please help if you can.

Thank you,

Nurse Erin

Massachusetts General Law Chapter 76 requires that each school notify parents and guardians if their student has five (5) or more unexcused school absences. Parents and guardians will receive a letter when their child has 5, 10, and/or 15+ days of unexcused absences. The letter will also include the number of unexcused tardies and unexcused early dismissals.

Absences will be excused under the following circumstances:

  • After a medical appointment documented with a note from the medical office

  • Illness or quarantine with a note from the appropriate medical office

  • Observance of a religious holiday

  • Bereavement or serious illness in family

  • Court appearance

  • A child may also be excused for other exceptional reasons with approval of the Principal or designee in accordance with the school committee policy and the regulations set in Chapter 76

Daily attendance is essential to a student's success. Missing a significant number of days of school has a detrimental effect on academic and social development. Therefore, each school will work with individual families to support student attendance.

SafeHarbor A Great Partner

Since July 2014, Safe Harbor Cohasset has been working to promote awareness and implement resources to help make an impact on the substance use in the community. The group has members from across the spectrum in the community, including, but not limited to, Paul Pratt Memorial Library, Cohasset Recreation Department, Cohasset Police Department, Cohasset Public Schools, Second Congregational Church, town leaders, health professionals, parents, youth, fire personnel, and concerned citizens. In September 2017, Safe Harbor was awarded a federal Drug- Free Communities (DFC) Support Program grant, which focuses on preventing substance use among youth ages 12-17.

Since then, the group has worked to foster a strong and inclusive community that allows youth to strive and encourages healthy, educated and responsible choices about drug and alcohol use. The mission is supported by evidenced based, prevention focused, sustainable policies and youth- focused programs, such as Ground Level Café and the Safe Harbor Youth Ambassador Program. The CMS administration and faculty communicate with our families using many digital and traditional means. Our weekly newsletter, the CMS Tide, will be sent to families and students every weekend. It is also posted on our school website and shared via Twitter (@comsprincipal).

We call it the CMS Tide because just like we find when we walk along the beach, the tide brings to us treasures from the deep. It helps us picture what is going on just beyond where we stand. The CMS Tide supplies news, images, stories about life at CMS to our families each week,
