Student Tardies
The picture above captures a fraction of our student population who arrived after the final bell on Wednesday. On a typical morning we have between 250 and 300 students who are tardy. Tardy students are disruptive to the class while missing out on academic information. Please have a conversation with your student about their morning routine and timeline to avoid being late. We understand that the traffic is very heavy from 7:20 and 7:45 a.m., please work with your student to develop a plan to be in class on time.
Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams Are Headed to State!
Congratulations to both teams who both placed third at Regionals.
They will be advancing to State on Saturday, November 1 at Primrose Equestrian Centre in Colorado Springs.
Good Luck!

Parent Volunteers Needed!
Parents,
Vision and Hearing Screening is November 6 & 7. We will need 4 volunteers for each time slot. If you are willing to help out please sign up.
Volunteers will be helping with the actual hearing screening but not the vision screening. Volunteers do not need prior experience. They will undergo a 15-20-minute training and practice session prior to working with the students.
Because of the technical nature of some of our screening procedures, we request that volunteers not bring children with them, and that they be able to come promptly for training at the requested time.

SNAP Benefits/School Lunches
Hello everyone,
The State of Colorado announced that SNAP benefits are on hold and will likely be delayed in November. According to the Colorado Department of Human Services website: “Because of the federal government shutdown, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has not released the funds that states use to pay SNAP (food assistance) benefits. This means Colorado is unable to issue the approximately $120 million of November SNAP benefits to clients until the federal government restores funding.”
The State is sending communication directly to impacted households and will continue to keep the DHS website updated with new information.
Hundreds of thousands of Colorado families use SNAP benefits and we know that this may cause you to worry about access to food. Please be assured that even if November SNAP benefits are delayed. School breakfast and lunches will continue as normal and remain free for DCSD students.
If you know of a family that needs additional food before their SNAP benefits are available, please share the following resources:
- Food Banks Serving Douglas County - includes 11 local food banks across the county
- Colorado 211: Call 2-1-1, 866-760-6489 or visit 211colorado.org.
- Feeding Colorado: Visit feedingcolorado.org/find-food or email info@feedingcolorado.org.
- Hunger Free Colorado: Call their Food Resource Hotline at 855-855-4626.
- A Precious Child - provides essential resources and opportunities for families
If any of your schools do the backpack program to provide food to families over the weekends, please see if additional families may need this support right now. Thank you for getting this important information out to families.
With Gratitude,

District Feedback Opportunities for Student Cell Phone Use in Schools
Last school year, via our strategic planning process and other staff efforts, DCSD began engaging our community about student cell phone use. We recognized that this was a hot topic nationally that many of our families, staff and students were already talking about.
Then, in May 2025, the state of Colorado passed a law requiring school districts and charter schools to publish student cell phone use policies by July 1, 2026.
As DCSD continues to work on its policy and approach to student cell phones and similar devices, we want to hear more from our families about what they think our policy should include and not include.
Below are a couple of opportunities to provide that feedback. We encourage our community to attend at least one of these meetings AND to complete the attached survey. Thank you in advance!
You can learn more on the DCSD Digital Literacy page.
Join an upcoming community meeting to learn more about, and provide your feedback on, student cell phone use in schools. During these meetings, participants will:
- Hear more about DCSD's process of developing a district-wide policy regarding the use of personal communications devices in school.
- Share thoughts on what student cell phone usage should look like in DCSD schools.
Thursday, November 6
6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
DCSD Administration Building - 3rd Floor Boardroom
620 Wilcox Street, Castle Rock
Monday, November 18
6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Virtual meeting
Recording will be made available on the DCSD website.
Please take a few minutes to complete the following survey on student cell phone usage in schools.
Survey - Student Cell Phone Usage in Schools
The survey is available in additional languages below.
** Please note: Many of the District's proposals for student cell phone use are in-line with the CHS policy that has been implemented for the last few years. We have found that our policy has had a positive impact on our students from both an academic and social aspect. **
