Spanish Language and Culture (Mr. Fontalvo, Ms. Gonzalez)

Last week, students completed their Term Writing Summative Assessment and wrapped up Hispanic Heritage Month with exciting activities exploring Hispanic culture! Throughout our celebration, students learned about famous Hispanic figures, important landmarks across Spanish-speaking countries, cultural celebrations, and traditional music from around the Hispanic world.

Next week, students will learn how to tell time in Spanish and continue strengthening their language skills through fun, engaging, and interactive classroom activities.

We are proud of our students' hard work and enthusiasm as they continue their Spanish-learning journey!

Looking ahead to Week 9, students will continue to focus on practicing directions through in-class activities.

To retake a summative in which a student scored 69% or below, they must complete a summative retake review. All retakes and makeup assignments must be scheduled in advance. Thursday, October 29, the last day of the term, is the last day for retakes (only one retake per assignment), makeup work (-10% if after excused absence deadline) or to turn in missing work not turned in on time (-10%) given between September 24 and October 29. For Profe. Donaldson, students can use the form at the top of his Canvas page. For Sra. Cuffee, students must use the format she provided to send her a message on Canvas.

This week in Spanish 2, students took their final summative of the advisory, a reading test testing the vocab of chapters 1-4. Students who were absent will take the test next week. Next week, students will work on their interpretive skills as we learn more about the Guatemalan civil war, which provides context for why the family in the book decides to immigrate to the United States. Students will independently watch documentary clips of adults who were filmed both as kids and later in their life describing how the 30 years of conflict impacted their lives. Over the next few days, students will use culture stations to delve into learning about other aspects of Guatemala- música (Gaby Moreno and others), comidas y postres, la ropa y los huipiles, geografía/ clima, idiomas indígenas/ turismo. Students will be out throughout the week on their spy museum trips and will be able to complete the stations when in class.

Spanish Humanities, grade 6 (Ms. Balestra)

This past week we prepared for our Summative by looking at each text individually and seeing how it relates (or does not relate) to our life. Students took a Summative on Thursday or Friday (depending on their field trip day). On the day they were not on a field trip, students worked on the past tense in Spanish.

Next week students will take a Summative to show their understanding of expressing themselves in the past tense.

This week, we worked extensively on vocabulary in preparation for reading Chapter 3 of Lazarillo de Tormes, “De pillo a pillo.” In this chapter, we explore how the blind man’s treatment transforms Lázaro from an innocent child into a pícaro: a young rogue who relies on cunning and deception to survive in sixteenth-century Spain.

I will be out on Monday. During class, students should finish reading Chapter 3 and complete the reading comprehension guide. They should have both materials in their binders, but extra copies will be available for the substitute. Please remind your children to show respect for themselves, the substitute, and our classroom while I am away.

On Tuesday, students will take a reading and vocabulary test. I will send out a study module to help them prepare. I recommend reviewing in several short sessions of about 20 minutes, rather than leaving all the studying until the last minute.

Thank you for your support! Have a lovely weekend, and see you soon!

Spanish Humanities, grade 8 (Ms. Wooten)

Next week students will be finalizing their third and final poem, in the style of a “nos gustaría que sepan” poem. Then we will learn about the cartonera publishing movement, design a cover for their portfolio, and work on finalizing their poems and putting together the final portfolio (due Monday Oct 26). Please remember that Wednesday Oct 28, students should bring food (4th period sign up here- 6th period sign up here) to enjoy while we share poems. Not all students will have to share a poem- we will do sign ups in class. Students will bring home their portfolios Wednesday afternoon after the celebration, so ask for another poetry reading at home! The final week of the advisory we will be reading short stories from the book Más Allá de la Frontera: crecer como mexicano en los EEUU before we start our next unit in advisory 2! Please remind students that the last day of the advisory is a book club seminar, in which they share insights from their independent reading during the first advisory.

French Language & Culture (Ms. Bullock, Mr. Almanza)

Last week, students had the opportunity to show what they know on our writing summative. This week, students will reviewing concepts based on class needs. This is also an opportunity for students to strengthen their areas of weakness. Language learning is cumulative, so everything we learn builds on a foundation! A weak foundation makes learning difficult. A strong foundation helps students soar.

The easiest way to learn French is to practice a little every day. Encourage your student to review regularly! Madame Bullock's students can use Match or online flashcards to review. (For data privacy, students do NOT need a quizlet account to practice!)

Grade 6

Last week our students learned stroke order, pinyin and numbers. We also learned how to ask and answer dates and each other’s birthday in Chinese. Students sing happy birthday songs in class! We had so much fun learning Chinese. Next week we will work on summative assessment and start learning lesson 3 School Supplies. We are excited to see their progress as they build their foundational communication skills in Chinese.

Grade 7

Our students will have an oral presentation next Tuesday describing their daily schedules and a written summative assessment on Lesson II Time and Activities. We will learn Lesson 3 My house. We are excited to see their progress as they build their speaking and writing skills in Chinese.

Grade 8

Last week our students continued exploring how to describe popular cities in China, plan vacation itineraries, decide activities for summer breaks and explain why. Students will prepare for the speaking summative assessment on Dream China Trip project next week and one written summative assessment the following week.
