Winter Uniforms - October 8th Winter Uniforms - October 8th

Winter Uniforms start on Tuesday, October 8th! If you need a reminder of what we expect our students to wear, please check the parent/student handbook. This date always sneaks up on me, so I am thinking (hoping?!) that maybe it does the same to you, too. I guess I should order new pants for my quickly growing 5th grader!!

Room 11 Classroom Library Room 11 Classroom Library

Last week, a group of students took the lead in reorganizing my classroom library. Check out last week's photos to see them in action!

If you have any books at home that you are ready to pass along, please send them in with your student. I am specifically looking for middle grades books. We will sort through the books when they arrive, and we will make sure that they are appropriate for our library (or pass them off as needed).

Chromebooks Chromebooks

Please check in with your students about the status of their Chromebook. Several students have complained about various technical issues. We have encouraged them to share the concern with you.

Each night, students should close all tabs, power off the device, and charge it. We have talked about these important practices to keep their Chromebooks up-to-date and functioning well.

It is very important to arrive at school each day with a fully charged Chromebook.

Last week, students reviewed story elements and read “Just Once.” Students are still very much immersed in the first set of Wordly Wise vocabulary words and corresponding word parts. Also, we identified simple, compound, and complex sentences, including coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.

This week, we will wrap up our first short story study with a test on “Just Once” and story elements at the end of the week. Also, we will start building background information for our first novel study, Freak the Mighty, by reading and annotating a nonfiction text, as well as reflecting upon various quotes from the book. Then, students will finish up vocabulary learning stations for Lesson 1 words. In Writing, we will review and play with figurative language!

Honors Math -This past week, we began working with integers. We reviewed how to compare and order the positive and negative numbers. Then we used the rules for addition. Next week we will learn the rules for subtraction, multiplication and division, order of operation rules and the distributive property. The class will have a test on Chapter 1, part 2 on Friday, 10/4.

Level Math -

We learned about unit rates and unit costs this past week. We used those concepts to compare ratios and determine the better buy. Next week, we will learn about proportions. We will see if two ratios are equal and then consider a few different methods to solve proportions. This class will also have a test Friday, 10/4

Science Science

This week, 6th grade learned about variables in a science experiment. We practiced many examples and then did our own experiment with gummy bears in different liquids. Take a look at the pictures. The kids liked it so much that they may ask you to buy some to repeat this at home!

Next week, sixth grade will have their first test on Thursday. The study guide is posted as of Friday. We will review in class together but they are expected to prepare a study tool outside of class time and bring it to class the day before the test. Students at this age really benefit from discussing this material with another person/parent. Although there is vocabulary, the majority of the test will be application of these concepts.

Thank you for your support at home!
