Principal's Corner
Greeting Boulevard Families,
We had another strong week of learning across all grade levels! Below is a snapshot of what students have been working on, along with connections to the Ohio Learning Standards and ways you can support learning at home.
Kindergarten Learning Spotlight
This week during WIN (What I Need) time, our kindergarten students were actively engaged in a variety of meaningful learning experiences. Students rotated through independent learning centers that focused on fine motor skills, writing, counting, and problem-solving with puzzles. In small group instruction, students worked closely with the teacher on letter formation and phonics, with a focus on the letter H.
The lesson then transitioned into a whole-group phonics review where students practiced identifying and using digraphs, blends, and ending sounds. Students used movement-based (kinesthetic) strategies to support their learning, helping them stay engaged while building foundational reading skills.
Ohio Learning Standard Connection:
This learning aligns with the Ohio Learning Standards for English Language Arts:
- RF.K.1d – Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet
- RF.K.2 – Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes)
- RF.K.3 – Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
Parent Tip:
You can support your child at home by practicing letter sounds and simple word patterns in fun, everyday ways. Try asking your child to find words that start with a specific sound (like “H”) around the house or while driving. You can also practice blending sounds together (e.g., /c/ /a/ /t/ → “cat”) to build early reading skills!
Second Grade Learning Spotlight
Second grade students explored the fascinating world of monarch butterflies. They listened to an informational text, discussed migration patterns and life cycles, and observed live caterpillars. Students recorded detailed scientific observations in their notebooks and strengthened vocabulary through words like larva, metamorphosis, and life cycle. The lesson also included a follow-up crossword activity to reinforce key concepts.
Ohio Standard Connection:
Ohio Science Standards – Life Science (LS): Students observe and describe life cycles and the basic needs of living organisms.
Parent Tip:
Ask your child to explain the stages of a butterfly’s life cycle. Encouraging them to “teach you” helps deepen understanding and builds confidence with academic vocabulary.
Third Grade Learning Spotlight
Third grade students engaged in solving multi-step word problems involving area and measurement. They applied multiplication and subtraction to determine totals and differences and used the CUBE strategy to break down complex problems. Students also practiced solving elapsed-time problems using a number line strategy (mountains, hills, rocks) to visualize time intervals.
Ohio Standard Connection:
Ohio Learning Standards for Mathematics – 3.MD & 3.OA: Solve problems involving measurement, area, and multiplication within real-world contexts.
Parent Tip:
Have your child solve real-life problems at home (e.g., “How long until dinner?” or “What is the area of this room using steps or tiles?”). Making math practical strengthens problem-solving skills.
4th Grade Learning Spotlight
Fourth grade students worked on multi-step practice problems aligned to the Ohio State Test. They focused on determining the area of shaded regions and evaluating multiplication equations using multiple strategies such as partial products and inverse operations. Students were encouraged to explain their reasoning and analyze the accuracy of solutions.
Ohio Standard Connection:
Ohio Learning Standards for Mathematics – 4.MD & 4.NBT: Apply area concepts and use place value understanding and operations to solve multi-step problems.
Parent Tip:
Encourage your child to explain how they solved a problem, not just the answer. Asking “Why does that work?” builds deeper mathematical understanding and prepares them for more complex thinking.
It was wonderful to see students engaged, thinking critically, and building both academic skills and confidence this week. As we head into next week, we are excited to continue growing, remembering our focus of getting 1% better every day.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Have a wonderful and safe weekend! We look forward to another great week of learning at Boulevard!

ARBOR DAY TREE PLANTING
Celebrating our Earth
Fourth grade students celebrated Arbor Day by actively giving back to their community. They participated in planting trees, shared original artwork, and read poems, demonstrating both creativity and environmental responsibility.
Last month, Mayor Jim Petras also visited the classroom, where students asked thoughtful questions and learned more about the importance of community involvement and civic leadership.
What a meaningful way for our 4th graders to get involved and make a positive impact!
