LEWIS ELEMENTARY NEWS
June 3rd
"DID YOU KNOW?"
EVERY SCHOOL DAY COUNTS. “Did you know about the summer slide?" Unfortunately this isn’t a fun ride at an amusement park. Students can lose 1-2 months of reading progress over the summer if they don’t practice their skills. The good news is reading for 20 minutes a day can maintain or even advance their skills. Please have your child read out loud to you and read to them to model fluent reading. Visit a nearby library— all PPS students have Multnomah Library accounts—to pick books to read together and independently.
As we wrap up an amazing year of learning, we are celebrating our students’ progress in academic and social-emotional skills. We are so proud of our students and look forward to seeing you all in late August. Next year our school-wide attendance goal is for 84% of students to have consistent attendance since EVERY SCHOOL DAY COUNTS.
Happy summer! ☀️

PTA News
What a night! It was a joyful celebration Friday evening with a DJ, hotdogs, pizza, ice cream treats, face painting and balloon swords/animals! Thank you to everyone who made it out to the end of year picnic. As always, this event wouldn’t have been possible without amazing volunteers! A ginormous thank you to LeAnne Forsberg, the committee chair who kept her cool even when the bouncy houses didn’t arrive (we had a blast without them). And, to the rest of the committee for planning and executing such a fun event! Thank you: Allison Bendixen, Nicole Koffler, Sherine Iskandar and Lee Pritchard. Special thanks to Dano’s hotdogs, Kevin Lee the DJ who kept the energy up all evening, our face painting trio, Bethany Austin for dedicating two hours to delighting kids big and small with balloon animals, and Heights Cream for making sure everyone got a fun dessert!
Want to get involved next year? Join the PTA or reach out to president@lewispta.org — we would love to add your name to our volunteer list!
Lewis Pride Parade
The energy is building, the banners are being prepped, and the glitter is ready — it’s time for our 6th Annual Pride Parade! Join us on Saturday, June 6, from 10 am to 2 pm at Lewis (Parade at 10:30 am). What began as a small, heartfelt school parade has blossomed into a beautiful, vibrant tradition for our entire community. It’s a day where we celebrate inclusion, diversity, and the simple, powerful act of love. This year, we’re dreaming even bigger to ensure every student and neighbor feels the warmth of this incredible community.
The Lewis Pride celebration is a vital, joyful sanctuary in an increasingly divided world. It’s our chance to stand together, loud and proud, to cheer on our kids and lift up our queer community. We aren't just hosting an event; we are building a world where every child knows they belong exactly as they are.
This year we have soooooo many more fun events, tables, partners, and resources available to our kids and community! We can't wait to celebrate with you on Saturday, June 6.

Thank you Lewis Community
Thanks so much to all the parents and family members who generously gave their time (and money) to help the Lewis PTA run so many community-building events and activities for our students. This year the PTA was able to start a new tradition of monthly Free Popcorn Fridays, supported Lewis teachers with funds for their classes, successfully fulfilled our requirements to be a unit in good standing with the Oregon PTA, made our finances more transparent with a budget committee and so much more. We’re looking forward to another year of serving our school community.
Turn outgrown clothes into PTA funding — from your porch!
A local parent at a neighboring school just launched a mission-driven business that we're excited about: a free porch pickup service for outgrown kids' clothes that funds our PTA with every sale.
Here's how it works: Schedule a pickup at beparentkind.com, leave your bags on the porch, and ParentKind handles everything else. They sort, photograph, and resell the items in their online store — and a meaningful percentage of every sale comes back to Lewis PTA.
Spring is the perfect time to clear out the clothes your kids have grown out of. Visit beparentkind.com to schedule your free porch pickup.
