We Salute You!

Here at Kestrel, our scholars are nurtured with our mission in mind. Last week, Kindergarten scholars worked hard to create their model of the American Flag to show recognition and appreciation to our community of service members. We are truly living out our mission of "Demonstrating creative expressions." We hope those who have served and are serving had a HAPPY VETERANS DAY 2021!

Thank you and remember, We Soar!!

Third Grade News

Third Grade is continuing to SOAR! In reading, we are working on Identifying themes. Next week students will compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of stories written by the same author about the same or similar characters. Scholars should continue to practice reading at home each day.

In Math, we are working on division. Since division is the inverse operation of multiplication, please continue to have your child practice their multiplication facts at home. Additionally, students enrolled in public schools should memorize multiplication tables to demonstrate competency in efficiently multiplying numbers.

Students will be presenting their science projects next week.

Fourth Grade News

Our fourth grade is currently having a book reading competition. Please make sure scholars are attempting to read every night. Every book they read earns the class the opportunity to win a prize. Also, please have scholars practice their multiplication timetables.

Sixth Grade News

In Mrs. Bowie’s English Class scholars are finishing up their group work on iReady on the various types of Text Structures. Additionally, scholars are analyzing the central idea of a text. All scholars said that they “absolutely love the cloud main idea video game.” First core scholars all said “We can’t wait to win a million dollars on Main Idea Millionaire!” Kenan Manson was the first scholar to officially win a million dollars this school year!!! Check out both games this week at home here: Main Idea / Main Idea Millionaire!

In Mr. Griffin's Social Studies Class scholars are working on their gods and Goddess' Project for ancient Egypt. They're focusing on the three major kingdoms. Matthew Malcolm who’s already finished his project said “It was easy to do, and fun actually! We just had to go to Google Classroom and research about their lives. My favorite person to learn about was Menes. He was a Pharaoh from the early dynastic period. He was ruler over lower Egypt who believed that he would become a God in the afterlife.”

In Mrs. Guess' Math Class this week scholars are working on determining the greatest common factor and the least common multiple. Karter Jones says that the most interesting thing we studied from this week was “using the least common multiple to determine the least common denominator, because it’s easier than trying to find a random denominator that two numbers share. You don’t have to reduce that much when you find the LCD.”

In Mr. Flynn’s Science Class scholars are learning about the earth, sun, and the moon. Specifically, they’re studying how the moon affects the tides. Kenan Manson says that the coolest thing about this week was that “even though the moon is smaller than the earth it sort of pulls earth towards it.”

In Mrs. Williams Science Class scholars are also studying the Earth-Moon Systems, and will be designing a Solar System project in the near future. After eagerly waiting in anticipation, Mrs. Williams announced that she has booked the weather team from News 11 to speak to our 6th & 7th graders!! Super exciting news! Kudos Mrs. Williams!!

We just finished "Magic and the Brain". Students were excited to gather in their groups and chart their answers to text related questions. Together, they composed a brief, cohesive statement of their results and posted it on the wall for other students to see. We are getting ready to begin our next informational text entitled "Saving the lost".

Science: Ms Williams

We are getting ready for some exciting things to happen in the Science classroom in the upcoming weeks. 7th grade scholars are creating their own cloud books that will be due after Thanksgiving. We are also eagerly awaiting a response from the News 11 weather team to see if they can visit our 6th and 7th graders after Thanksgiving as well.

COVID Vaccination Record

If we receive notification of a positive diagnosis of COVID, we are required to trace any exposure that may have occurred. Those who are exposed are then sent home for up to 10 days to quarantine or, they may be tested after four days and return with a negative result. However, for scholars who have already received the vaccine and are not showing symptoms, they may not have to quarantine at all.

If your scholar has received or if they do receive the COVID vaccination, would you please share the documentation with us so that we may update your scholar's school health record? In the case of an exposure this will assist us in communicating with you if your child must go home or may remain in school.

Thank you to the many Middle School Families who have already submitted the documentation.

Vaccine documentation may be emailed or dropped off to Ms. Vargas in the Middle School Admissions Office. Thank you!

What's up with the big green box?:

If you've driven by the middle school, you may have noticed the new green collection bin between the school and the athletic field. We've partnered with Green Zone Recycling to begin a textile recycling program at KHCS! This easy solution provides a convenient way for our community to donate unwanted items, reducing the flow into our landfills and generating extra funding for our school.

How does it work?

-Place your clean and dry clothing, shoes, and household items in a bag and drop them in the collection bin.

-Green Zone Recycling collects the items from the bin each week.

-Once items are sorted, Green Zone distributes usable items to be resold. Unusable items get shredded so that the fibers can be repurposed into new materials.

-Green Zone will make a small payment to our school for every pound of items collected.

Please refer to the flyer for additional information or contact pta@kestrelheights.org with any questions.

Keeping up with the PTA:

You can become a PTA member at our new membership portal: https://khcspta.square.site
Our next PTA meeting will be held virtually on Monday, December 13th at 6pm. You do not need to be a member to attend PTA meetings, so drop in to see what we're working on. We hope to see you there! https://meet.google.com/ogi-jwan-gdg
