What's the Scoop in Room 123?
October 16, 2026
Teacher Update 🤗:
Hello Room 123 Families,
What a busy few weeks! Students shopped at the book fair, took class/individual pictures, and we completed our first unit in math. Next week we will review rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, 3-digit addition, and 3-digit subtraction. The unit test will be on Tuesday. We also secured a library time! We will check out books at the Memorial Library on Tuesdays.
Today our students started unit 2 in math, which is on multiplication! I always introduce this unit with play-doh! We learned the vocabulary of multiplication (factor, product, array, rows X columns) and used play-doh to make equal groups. Students were very excited! Please see the attached photos.
Here is the order in which we will introduce and teach the multiplication math facts.
Lesson 5: Multiply with 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10
Lesson 6: Multiply with 3, 4, and 6
Lesson 7: Multiply with 7, 8, and 9
*This is the time to bust out the fact fluency flashcards, games, and nightly review. 😀
There are a few curriculum updates below. Please take a look and reach out with any questions.

Family Engagement!
Looking for a reason to come into school? We LOVE having families in our classroom. You are welcome to email me and plan a read aloud, class activity, or come teach about a family cultural tradition or celebration. I've had families in the past teach about holidays, read books, lead an art project, etc. Our students love having special events. I will start a mystery reader sign up in January but you are more than welcome to come in before then. Please email me if you are interested in setting up a day, especially for birthdays!
Curriculum Updates! 📚
ELA (English Language Arts):
Reading:
Our students are doing a great job working through the first unit. Here are the genres we have studied, along with what is next!
Week 1: Traditional Tales
Week 2: Folktales
Week 3: Realistic Fiction
Week 4: Nonfiction
Week 5: Myths
Week 6: Persuasive Project - up next and more details to come!
Writing:
Students have been engaging in opinion writing for their first unit of study. We have studied prompts, reviewed strategies, and students followed along with a teacher modeled essay. Next, we will collaboratively write an opinion essay together. After that, students will begin to write on their own. We continue to use the mnemonics of TREE and POWre. TREE stands for topic sentence, reasons, examples, and ending. POWre (yes, that is the way the word should be spelled!), stands for pick a topic, organize your thoughts, write, revise, and edit. Ask your student what they stand for!
Math:
Next week we will dive into our second unit, which will be on Multiplication and Division.
Lesson Outline:
Lesson 4: Understand the Meaning of Multiplication
Lesson 5: Multiply with 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10

Social Studies:
Here is a document provided by DESE to outline the overall structure of the program.
Unit 1: Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of Indigenous people of the Northeast, past and present, by responding to questions representative of themes throughout the unit to the Indigenous peoples that live today.
Essential Question: How have Indigenous peoples lived in the Northeast, past and present?
The first unit is broken down into 3 clusters, each with their own focus.
Cluster 1: How can maps provide clues about land and people in the Northeast?
Cluster 2: (We are just starting this cluster.) What is the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the land?
Cluster 3: Where can we see Indigenous culture today, and how do Indigenous peoples keep their culture alive?
SEL (Social-Emotional Learning):
Each month we will have a trait of the month. We engage in SEL lessons during morning meeting, through class discussions, read alouds, and activities. We will focus on empathy and being proud of who you are. Next week we will read a book called, The Proudest Blue.
Book Description:
"With her new backpack and light-up shoes, Faizah knows the first day of school is going to be special. It's the start of a brand new year and, best of all, it's her older sister Asiya's first day of hijab--a hijab of beautiful blue fabric, like the ocean waving to the sky. But not everyone sees hijab as beautiful, and in the face of hurtful, confusing words, Faizah will find new ways to be strong.
Paired with Hatem Aly's beautiful, whimsical art, Olympic medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad and Morris Award finalist S.K. Ali bring readers an uplifting, universal story of new experiences, the unbreakable bond between siblings, and of being proud of who you are."
Monthly Traits:
September: Friendship
October: Empathy
