5 Things to Know Weekly Update
September 14, 2026
Dear Colleagues,
I’m glad to say that I am back on track, and (almost) able to sleep at night without worrying that 80 mph winds are on their way. In the meantime, Kauai continues to clear its roads and restore electricity, but they have a long road ahead of them, including being able to reopen Kauai Community College (which lost many trees on campus, among other issues). We are not facing natural disasters, I hope, but could have a wet winter – luckily, we repaired several roofs over the last few months and should be fine. Please do remember to report any maintenance issues that you see – here’s the link: https://cccdis.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portals. We don’t have a huge campus, but it still takes everyone working together to keep it in good shape for students. Mahalo!

Tomorrow is the start of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15) and the Multicultural Center has planned a series of events. Please encourage students to attend and attend yourselves, too! With more than 30% of our students identifying as Hispanic, this is a great opportunity to honor their heritage and create belonging.
This Friday is the next event to celebrate GWC’s 60th Anniversary: a concert at the Amphitheater with the Tijuana Dogs. There will be food and a beer garden, too – should be a lot of fun and less than 80 degrees! Tickets for staff are 50% off (LINK) and don’t miss the art show reception immediately before the concert. See you there!
Thanks to Trustee Moreno, the Police Academy, Dawn Dittmer and Rick Hicks, we were able to have a small 9/11ceremony last Friday to remember the people who lost their lives and the first responders and civilians who did not hesitate to offer assistance. Trustee Moreno had gifted the College a piece of the twin towers – if you have not seen it, it is in a display case at the CJ training center.
Continuing on a somber note, I need to remind everyone that we are an open campus in the middle of a city and many people come on campus every day. Unfortunately, a small number are here to commit theft or vandalism. Please lock your doors if you are leaving an office area unattended and keep track of your personal belongings. If you can’t lock an area, secure purses and other important items. Report any suspicious behavior to Public Safety and call for an escort if needed. We are not seeing an increase – this is just a reminder to be aware.
I will be on campus all week, doing my best to be useful. 😊 Let me know if you need anything.
