Message from the Superintendent

The latest Smarter Balance test scores, which were published statewide this week, confirm what we already knew: in-person school makes a difference. Students grow and develop the greatest when learning in the supportive and rigorous environments of our schools.

We appreciate all assessments, including Smarter Balance, which help inform where we need to focus our work. Assessment feedback helps us identify skill deficits and determine what students need. The Smart Balance assessment provides summative feedback on learning progress from the previous year. Additionally, three times a year, LOSD elementary and middle school students complete diagnostic assessments. Diagnostic testing enables teachers to have a laser-like focus on a student's strengths and areas for growth to personalize their learning and monitor their progress throughout the school year. For our high school students, in addition to formative assessments, the AP, SAT, and ACT tests provide insight into our high school students’ performance.

While LOSD scores are the highest of all large comprehensive K12 school districts in Oregon, we have higher expectations for our work. We continue to strive for educational excellence through equitable academic outcomes. We compare ourselves to school districts in the state and country, and we look forward to being able to review national test scores, when available, for further insight.

For students who need additional support, we provide differentiated instruction and interventions through the Multi-Tiered Support System (MTSS), which is being implemented and strengthened in all of our schools.

We are confident that scores will improve as we have more time with our students in the classroom.

Community Level: Low

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) looks at the combination of three metrics — new COVID-19 admissions per 100,000 population in the past 7 days, the percent of staffed inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients, and total new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population in the past 7 days — to determine the COVID-19 community levels. Using this data, the COVID-19 community level is classified as low, medium, or high. Clackamas County is currently in low (green).
