June newsletter
This e-newsletter is intended for Osseo Area Schools Community Education staff with highlights from Community Education programs during the month of June.
Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Five Year Narrative
Every five years the ABE program develops a Five Year Narrative. The narrative is a public facing document that outlines program policies, practices and includes robust information about program operations. The 2024 Five Year Narrative includes the following categories: program overview, accountability, professional development and training, educational quality, integration and collaboration, program resources and successes and challenges. The 2024 Five Year Narrative is available on the ABE website.
ABE piloting new online registration process
ABE is piloting a new online registration system - for the first time, students can express interest in participating in ABE classes through the website by clicking on the "Start" button. We will continue to support students who call or come to the window to register for classes and are excited about this new opportunity for those people who would like to start the process independently! In just one week, we have had over 25 people find the link independent of any staff communication or support.
Adult and Youth Enrichment
Adult Enrichment
Youth Enrichment classes
- 373 students participated in a Mini Camp at Elm Creek Elementary School during the first two weeks of summer camps.
- 50 middle school students are participating in the musical Finding Nemo Kids at Osseo Senior High School. The performances are scheduled Friday, July 12 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, July 13 at 2 p.m. at Osseo Senior High School.
- About 900 students are enrolled and participating in Camp ROCKS Academic Adventures (CRAA) at Weaver Lake: A Science, Math & Technology School, Fair Oaks Elementary School
and Crest View Elementary School.
- 90 students participated in Camp Invention the week of June 17-21 at Elm Creek Elementary School. The camp is for grades K-6 and featured many creative, STEM-related activities:
- In the Game: Campers created and designed a game. The worked to create rules, a brand, and how to best market the game.
- Let’s Glow: Campers learned about different forms of illumination in this module. They built a light box and were able to experiment on how to best light up their designs.
- Operation Hydro drop: Campers learned about the water issues we face around the world. They learn about the role water plays for people and the planet, then customize a robotic lab-on-wheels to assist in their exploration.
- Prototyping Studio: In this module, campers were the stars in a game show format where they created prototypes for items that we can use to solve problems in our everyday lives
"Parents and students LOVE Camp Invention. Students come back year after year so excited to create in this STEM-based camp," shared Christina Burns-Saugstad, Camp Invention director.

Early Childhood & Family Education [EC&FE]
ECPTO Summer Playdates
The Early Childhood Parent Teacher Organization (ECPTO) launched its free summer playdates on June 24 with a gathering at Weaver Lake Park. About ten families came together, enjoying the sunny weather, playtime, and treats provided by the ECPTO. These playdates offer children the opportunity to explore new parks, make friends, and for parents to connect with each other and learn more about the ECPTO. The ECPTO has scheduled six additional playdates at various local parks through mid-August. Families seeking enjoyable activities this summer are encouraged to join! Download the Summer Playdates flyer for dates and locations.
