Greetings, Jefferson Families and Friends:

We go MARCHing in!

Hopefully the cold and snow are nearly and completely behind us! One quarter to go until the end of the school year. This year has flown by. We will have Spring Break coming up March 10 thru the 15th. March 15 is Teacher Professional Development Day. School will resume on Thursday, March 16th.

CONGRATULATIONS MRS. HAHN

Mrs. Kara Hahn was named NEBRASKA SCHOOL COUNSELOR OF THE YEAR last Thursday, February 23, in Lincoln, NE. Across the state, more than 40 school counselors were nominated by someone in their school for this honor. She then had to go through an application process and collect letters of support from different people.

The competition included all levels of school counselors including Elementary, Middle, and Secondary counselors. Mrs. Hahn was one of six semi-finalists, then one of three finalists, to finally win as the Nebraska School Counselor of the Year. Mrs. Hahn will represent all Nebraska School Counselors, the North Platte Public School District, and Jefferson School when she gets to travel to Washington, D.C., next February along with the title holders from all of the other states. Congratulations Mrs. Hahn!

PTO

Our PTO does a lot of activities for us throughout the year. They treated all of our students to bowling at Wild Bill’s recently and they sponsor our Bingo 4 Books on Thursday, March 2 from 6:00-7:00. They will also help out with DARE graduation and 5th Grade Recognition. However, they are in need of some parents that want to get involved. At the end of the school year, Emily Hasenauer will be stepping down as her duties at the High School are increasing. The PTO is looking to fill an officer position for next year as well as get additional help from parents for various activities. If you would like to join PTO and get involved more, come to the next meeting Tuesday, March 7th at 6:00pm in the Jefferson School Library. Most meetings last 30 minutes or less. They plan to take nominations in March and vote at our April meeting, Tuesday, April 4 at 6:00pm.

Walking Club

With the weather warming up, we will resume out door Walking Club. We just ask that you pull all the way forward and try not to block the parking spaces next to the fence when using the drive thru. We would appreciate it. Reminder that if we are able to be outside, we will be….temperature must be 15* above 0 and the blacktop cleared.

Because it is winter and we do have snow and other weather, please make sure your students are dressed appropriately for the weather. Students that are wearing snow boots are allowed to play in the snow, as long as they have other shoes to change back into. If students do not have snow boots, ie. tennis shoes, they will stay on the blacktop. Remember also that our policy for Walking Club in the morning is: “Feels Like 15* or Warmer,” and we walk outside before school.

Read Across America Week

Help us out with the “Sock Drive,” where we are gathering NEW pairs of socks to give to area homeless shelters.

PTO is running the Read-A-Thon once again.

We will also have Bingo For Books Thursday, March 2. FREE!!! WIN PRIZES! Get some BOOKS!

Spring Break

Don’t forget that Friday, March 10, there will be no school as it is the NPPSD Spring Break. It will end Wednesday, March 15. Students will resume school and begin the 4th quarter on Thursday, March 16.

Student Behaviors

We have been seeing a lot of negative behaviors from many students at all grade levels including Preschool. Some behaviors include arguing with teachers; not following directions; yelling; and even swearing in the hallways and in the classrooms; and a few incidents of hands on. Due to snow and more to temperatures, the kids don’t get to go outside for recess everyday and that adds to behaviors. We need your help and support to convey to your students the importance of doing the right thing and being accountable. We all make mistakes and we don’t expect anyone to be perfect. However, we do have the expectations that students will follow directions, do their school work, and treat others how they would want to be treated. The same goes for us as adults. I expect my staff will do their best to educate your students and treat them like their own children or better. We expect the parents of our school to support us and help us to grow your children into great citizens. One day these kids will be running our government and taking care of us as we age. They will be calling the shots. I want to make sure that I am cared for properly when I am in the nursing home one day. Please encourage your students to do the right thing, follow directions, and complete their work. Thank you for all of your support. We want to work with you not against you to ensure your children receive a great education.

SPRING FORWARD

Don’t forget to “Spring Forward,” perhaps for the last time..ever..Sunday, March 12. Wind those clocks forward one hour. Easter is right around the corner.

Wild Card Room - Candy Land Theme Wild Card Room - Candy Land Theme

Each year, North Platte Public School district provides teachers with professional development and tools to enhance their teaching. This year, teachers read the book “The Wild Card” which talks about transforming teaching into an adventure – with excitement for students. Inspired by this, a team of staff at Jefferson Elementary came up with a “wild card” room, where students and teachers can go to learn in an out-of-the-box way and have fun while doing it! This year’s theme is Candy Land—from Lollipop Lane to the Rainbow Trail, all the way to Gumdrop Mountain, the Candy Land room is sure to inspire!

Here are some photos from our time in the Candy Land room. We played a life size board game to practice what we've been learning, complete with writing and oral practice. Then, if they got through the whole game, they earned a prize from Gumdrop Mountain!

PBIS PBIS

Reminder to all students, parents, and staff. PBIS is a support team that assists students in making positive choices and environments for learning. This month we are reviewing and focusing on appropriate voice levels and when to use them, hallway expectations to assist with encouraging engagement in the classroom, and classroom expectations that create positive and interactive learning environments.

Jefferson Teachers and Staff are excited to use our new "Wild Card" room for incentives for grades and positive behavior. Every class will have the chance to utilize this new room. Look for more information to come out as this room is currently in the "decorating development" stage.
