📣 Families! Here's What's Happening...

Good Morning Key & Venture Families,

It's so good to be able to share news about what we are doing and what is coming up for our students! First, I would like to thank our PSSO Executive Board and Membership for the purchase of George Key's new washing machine! At a time when budgets are tight, we appreciate PSSO's commitment to provide for our students. At George Key, our nursing staff completes approximately 350 health related procedures weekly. Laundry is done on a daily basis. Thank you for seeing our need. Our PSSO also provided a fun musical assembly for us on Thursday, November 6th. Everyone enjoyed the music and story telling of musician Kevin Schatz. Lots of dancing, clapping and fun! Ms. Grace's Preschool really got into the sounds. Thanks again to our PSSO and thanks to Principal Kristin McDonald for the use of Golden Elementary's MPR.

Halloween celebrations included a costume parade and a Haunted House for George Key and a costume and best decorated door contest by Venture Academy. On November 7th, we had our monthly Venture & George Key Student and Staff Award Assemblies. Congratulations to all of our winners!

Monday, November 10th, George Key had their first art lesson with Valerie Gabriel, teacher at Van Buren. She worked with each student and taught about color, shapes and texture. Ms. Gabriel is compensated through our Prop 28 funds with approval of our School Site Council.

Coming up this week: on Wednesday, PSSO will have a general membership meeting at George Key starting at 3:30 pm. Please join us if you can as we talk about upcoming events for both Key and Venture. An email with a Zoom link has been sent for those that wish to participate through Zoom.

On Friday morning I will be speaking to the Yorba Linda Sunrise Rotary Club. This is our organization that provides presents for the George Key students, a visit with Santa and generous donation for book supplies. I will be speaking about our partnership and the history of service Rotary has provided to our school. The annual George Key & Rotary Holiday party will be on December 12, 2025 beginning at 10:30 AM in the George Key Courtyard.

This Friday, November 14th, is our quarterly Parent and Student Activity Event for George Key School. Please come on Friday and enjoy time with your student making crafts and listening to a fall story. A flyer with all the information was sent by email and a hard copy will go home with each George Key student.

It's back! Venture's Holiday Boutique will be open at Venture in Room 2, December 2nd-December 4th from 9:00 AM-1:30 PM Please come and see the unique gifts our students have made. Thank you for your support for the Venture program!

Venture's First Holiday Musical will be held on December 16th at 6:30 PM at Esperanza High School in the theater. Student performers and Venture Choir must be at Esperanza by 5:30 PM that evening. Donations of $5 would be welcome.

Thank you to everyone who helps make Key and Venture a family! And now photos...enjoy!

Warmly, Rebecca

Readtopia for Parents

Hi Everyone,

I want to provide some ideas to help increase your student's communication and literacy skills that you can work on at home. Reading to your student is a great way to help expand their vocabulary and reading skills. When reading with your student, make sure to have their communication device or core board available, and have them respond using their communication devices. Remember the 36 core words are words that are highly functional and can stand for several ideas. For example, the word "go" is very flexible and can be used to describe concepts such as, "its time to go." (leave) or, "look at that dog go." (run) or, "Go and get your brother." (bring him back) or, "Where do you want to go today?" (place.)

2. You can always ask your student if he/she ("Likes" or "Not likes") a given activity, item, etc.

3. Have your student predict what they think will happen next in the story, give him/her a field of 2-3 choices (pictures with single words to make their selection.) This is working on developing higher level thinking skills.

These are just a few simple ideas to help extend your reading time and help your student communicate and increase literacy.
