November CogAT Testing November CogAT Testing

Dear Parents/Guardians,

DCSD is committed to implementing equitable practices to increase access to advanced/gifted learning opportunities. Based on state and national recommendations and requirements, we implement Universal Screening for students in 2nd grade (February) and 5th grade (November).

5th Grade Universal Screen

As part of this process, ALL students in 5th grade not identified for gifted programming will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) the week of November 9th. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.

If your child is already identified for gifted programming, they will not participate in this universal screen testing. Your Gifted Education Facilitator will contact you directly with information about this process.

Gifted Identification Referral Testing

  • If your child is in grades 3 and 4, and you believe they need evaluation for Gifted Identification and Services, you may refer your child for testing by initiating the Gifted Identification Process.

  • NOTE: Requesting this assessment automatically initiates the process to evaluate for Gifted Identification.

  • Please request CogAT testing for your child by completing the DCSD Gifted & Talented Referral Form.

  • Upon receipt of this form the Gifted Education Facilitator will connect with you to discuss next steps in the gifted identification process.

Happy October, Eagle Ridge Families!

Can you believe we have made it to the fall?! As we get settled into the school year, the counseling office often begins to see an increase in student disagreements. Working out relationships throughout the school year can be hard! And–it’s normal that it's hard!

Conflict is a normal part of relationships. Students will have disagreements with friends, classmates, and adults. Conflict resolution isn't about avoiding conflict or always agreeing—it's about learning how to communicate, listen, problem-solve, and move forward respectfully.

Here are some helpful strategies for students to remember when experiencing conflict:

  1. Pause before reacting when emotions are strong.

  2. Try using an “I feel, I need” statement-Example: I feel frustrated, I need some space.

  3. Remember to use respectful words and take responsibility for your own actions.

  4. Synergize to work towards a solution when possible

  5. Ask a trusted adult for help when needed.

Families: Practice at Home

When your child comes home upset about a disagreement, it can be tempting to immediately solve the problem. Instead, use the moment to coach rather than fix.

Try asking:

  • "What happened?"

  • "What were you feeling? What do you think the other person was feeling?"

  • "What part of this can you control?"

  • "What could you say or do next?"

Remember: The goal isn't for children to have the "perfect" response. It's to help them build skills they can use throughout life: pausing, communicating, listening, showing empathy, and problem-solving.

Should your student be experiencing an ongoing conflict with a classmate and need an adult to help, please reach out to the counseling office for further assistance. We are always here as a resource to partner with students and families!

We are excited to kick off our Spelling Bee season! Students who would like to participate can start practicing now!

Families can visit Scripps National Spelling Bee at spellingbee.com to access helpful study resources.

Parents can create a FREE Spelling Bee Resource Center account to access official grade-level study lists and the complete School Spelling Bee Study List.

Another fun way to practice is the FREE Word Club app, where students can work on spelling and vocabulary words through games and activities.

A few tips for getting started:

  • Practice just a few words each day.

  • Have someone quiz you aloud.

  • Say the word, spell it, and say the word again.

  • Pay attention to tricky spelling patterns.

  • Most importantly—have fun and do your BEE-st!

Happy spelling, and we can't wait to cheer on our ERE spellers!
